Key specs that matter

A 10 mm Magnetic Fluid Driver is fitted in each bud. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 40 kHz when LDAC runs at 96 kHz and 990 kbps. Bluetooth 5.3 carries the SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codecs, the last belonging to the LE Audio standard. With AAC the buds play for about 10 hours with noise cancelling on and 12 hours with it off, and recharges from the case bring the total to about 28 hours with noise cancelling on. With LDAC the figures are about 7 hours per charge and 18 hours with the case. A 15-minute charge gives 90 minutes of playback. Each earbud weighs about 5.9 g and the case about 42 g. The earbuds carry an IPX4 equivalent rating against splashes.

Engineering and use context

In the Magnetic Fluid Driver an oil-type liquid filled with magnetic particles is injected between the magnet and the voice coil, which steadies the movement of the diaphragm and lowers distortion. The diaphragm is aluminium with an ultra-thin free edge, allowing response down to 3 Hz. Noise cancelling is a full adaptive digital hybrid system, with ambient and attention modes as further listening options. For calls Technics uses Voice Focus AI and JustMyVoice processing with an AI noise reduction chip and three MEMS microphones in each bud. Compared with the EAH-AZ80, the housing is a smaller stemless cylinder about 1 g lighter per side, while the case shrank in size and gained battery capacity. Dolby Atmos with head tracking is supported. The box includes five ear tip sizes - XS, S, M, ML and L - with ML new for this model. The charging case is topped up by USB Type-C cable or by a Qi-compatible wireless mat.

Pairing

Multipoint lets the earbuds stay connected to three devices at a time, and the pairing memory holds up to ten. LDAC requires a source device that supports the codec, and with other phones and tablets the link runs on AAC, which also gives the longest battery figures. The Technics Audio Connect app provides equalizer adjustment, noise cancelling control and firmware updates.

Alternatives

The Technics EAH-AZ80 preceded this model in the Technics earbud line and uses 10 mm drivers, eight microphones for calls and about 7 hours of playback per charge.
