Est. year: 1947

AKG Acoustics was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1947 by physicist Rudolf Gorike and engineer Ernst Pless, originally under the name Akustische und Kino-Geraete Gesellschaft, shortened to AKG in 1965. The pair had begun supplying technical equipment to postwar Viennese cinemas in 1945 out of a small rented basement with just five employees, initially building loudspeakers, projectors and light meters, and were often paid in food or cigarettes rather than currency during the immediate postwar years. The company introduced its first headphone, the K120 DYN, in 1949, and in 1953 introduced the world's first dynamic cardioid microphone, establishing a professional-audio reputation that would define the brand for decades.

Range & what it's known for

AKG's catalog spans Hi-Fi and Hi-End headphones alongside the professional microphones for which the brand remains a genuine reference name in recording, broadcast and live-sound studios worldwide, including the celebrated D12 dynamic microphone that set the standard for voice transmission across radio and television through the 1950s and 60s. The 1989 K1000 headphone system, an unusual open, earspeaker-style design for both hi-fi purists and studio use, remains one of the brand's most distinctive consumer-audio products.

Who owns it and where it's made

AKG became a publicly listed company on the Vienna stock exchange in 1984 before Harman International acquired a controlling stake in 1993 and the remainder in 1994. Harman itself has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics since 2017. Historically, more than 95 percent of AKG products were manufactured at the company's own factory in Vienna, though manufacturing has since diversified across Harman's global supply chain.
