Accuphase Laboratory is a Japanese maker of hi-fi electronics based in Yokohama, founded in 1972 by former Trio-Kenwood engineer Jiro Kasuga. It began as Kensonic Laboratory in Ota-ku, Tokyo, moved to its present Yokohama site in 1973 and took the Accuphase company name in 1982 to match the brand. The name joins the words accurate and phase, and gold faceplates with twin analogue power meters make the products easy to recognise.
Range & what it's known for
The first products in 1973 were the C-200 preamplifier, P-300 power amplifier and T-100 tuner, and the range still covers the whole electronic chain. Today it includes integrated amplifiers such as the E-480, class A power amplifiers such as the stereo A-75 and the monophonic A-250 and A-300, preamplifiers up to the C-3900S, SA-CD and CD players, the DC-500 digital processor, FM tuners, digital voicing equalisers, frequency dividing networks and mains power supply units. Two in-house techniques shape many models. AAVA, introduced with the C-2800 preamplifier in 2002, takes the conventional volume potentiometer out of the signal path and sets level through variable-gain amplification, while MCS connects several amplification circuits in parallel to lower noise. Models stay in production for long periods, and units from the first series are still in use.
