The TT-15S1 is a belt-drive turntable from Marantz, supplied complete with a tonearm and a moving-magnet cartridge. Marantz designed it and Clearaudio built it in Germany, and it was released in 2006 as Marantz's reference turntable at a price of USD 3,000. It comes ready to play once assembled, with the Clearaudio Satisfy arm and Virtuoso cartridge already chosen to work together.
Key specs that matter
A non-servo AC motor turns the platter through a silicone belt. The motor pulley has two grooves, one for 33 1/3 rpm and one for 45 rpm, and the belt is shifted by hand to change speed, with a speed variation of ±0.2%. The platter measures about 297 mm in diameter and about 30 mm thick. The tonearm is the Clearaudio Satisfy in anodised aluminium, with anti-skating and a machined counterweight. The cartridge is the Clearaudio Virtuoso, a moving-magnet design with a wooden body weighing about 6 g, 3.6 mV output at 1 kHz and 5 cm/s, a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 80 dB signal to noise ratio and channel separation above 30 dB. The turntable measures 419 x 137 x 361 mm without the tonearm and weighs 8.9 kg without the arm and motor. Power consumption is 5 W.
Engineering and use context
Marantz made the motor a separate free-standing unit that does not touch the chassis, so its vibration cannot travel through the plinth to the bearing and stylus. Only the belt connects the two, and the silicone belt also absorbs part of the remaining motor vibration. A non-servo AC motor runs at a speed determined by the mains frequency, without an electronic feedback loop. The chassis and platter are both made of high-density, low-resonance acrylic in a white frost finish. The chassis stands on three adjustable aluminium feet, which allow it to be levelled on any support, and three points of contact cannot rock. Moving the belt between the two pulley grooves is a manual process, which keeps the drive free of speed-switching electronics. Marantz gives a five-year warranty on the turntable and 30 days on the cartridge and stylus.
Pairing
The Virtuoso cartridge needs a moving-magnet phono stage, either built into an amplifier or as a separate unit, and its output level suits any standard MM input. Marantz integrated amplifiers with phono inputs connect directly.
Alternatives
The Marantz TT-5005 is a simpler fully automatic belt-driven deck that includes its own phono preamplifier for amplifiers without a phono input.
