The T 002 B is the first turntable from Ballfinger, the Krefeld company known for its reel-to-reel tape machines. Roland Schneider shaped it after the Ulm School ideas of rational justification and visual restraint, taking the form and control layout straight from the M 002 P playback deck, while the engineering came from Helmut Thiele, who has designed turntables for various makers for nearly five decades. It is handcrafted in Germany, and German prices including 19% VAT start at EUR 15,950 without an arm and reach EUR 21,270 with the Thiele TA01, with deliveries from June 2026.
Key specs that matter
A synchronous motor drives a sub-platter through a precision-ground flat belt, and Ballfinger quotes speed deviation of 0.020%. Both 33 1/3 and 45 rpm are chosen on the control panel, with fine adjustment of plus or minus 5%. The bearing uses a 10 mm hardened steel shaft turning in a bronze bushing, with axial load carried by a ceramic ball on a ring-shaped Delrin thrust pad. The outboard supply runs on 115 V to 230 V and uses analogue DC stabilisation. The deck can be ordered bare or with one of two factory-fitted arms.
Engineering and use context
Instead of a metal or MDF plinth, the chassis is a solid block of cross-laminated bamboo. Its long parallel fibres with air cells between them act as a natural damper, and alternating the fibre direction from layer to layer makes vibrations die out faster. A solid damping weight is hidden inside the block, set in a permanently elastic plastic compound. The motor follows an electronically generated sine wave, and each motor is selected for smooth running. The bearing is designed for a precisely defined friction. Two spirit levels are set into the upper left corner and three height-adjustable feet level the deck, which the TA01 arm requires. With the TA01 fitted, an XLR output and the power socket sit on the underside so no cables show from any side. Finishes are matte silver with grey side panels or matte black with black sides.
Pairing
The Thiele TA01 zero-tracking arm combines three-point bearing rigidity with tangential geometry, holding tracking error to 0.036 degrees, and its double-walled tube is filled with a two-component gel. It has 14 g effective mass and Zavfino Solid Pure Silver wiring. The Zavfino Crossbow TZ-1 is a 9-inch radial arm of ceramic-coated 6061 aluminium with a needle bearing, oil or gel damping and 15 g effective mass. Both suit cartridges with compliance near 20 um/mN, and Ballfinger names the Ortofon MC 90X for either arm and the MC Verismo for the TA01.
Alternatives
Ballfinger builds no second turntable, since the T 002 B is the single record player in a catalogue otherwise made up of tape machines and accessories.
