The SL-1300G is a direct-drive deck belonging to the Grand Class family from Technics, the hi-fi brand of Panasonic. It is the next model to receive the fourth-generation treatment after the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2 of 2023. It uses the brand's Delta Sigma Drive motor control, which applies PWM technology to suppress motor vibration for smoother and more accurate rotation. The US list price is USD 3,999.99, the UK price GBP 2,799, and the plinth comes in a black or a silver version.

Key specs that matter

Supported speeds are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm, the last being 78.26 rpm in practice. Wow and flutter measures 0.025 percent W.R.M.S., while starting torque is 0.32 N m, and the platter reaches 33 1/3 rpm in 0.7 seconds. The platter is 332 mm across and weighs about 3.6 kg including its rubber sheet. The tonearm is a static balance type in lightweight rigid aluminium, with an effective length of 230 mm, an overhang of 15 mm and an offset angle of 22 degrees. The detachable headshell weighs about 7.6 g, arm height adjusts over 0 to 6 mm, and the direct-reading stylus pressure scale covers 0 to 4 g. Power consumption is 10 W when on and 0.2 W when off. The deck measures 453 x 173 x 372 mm and weighs approximately 13.0 kg.

Engineering and use context

Motive power comes from a brushless, coreless DC unit with twin rotors and nine stators. It is a new variant of the double-rotor motor that produces far greater torque than the motor in the SL-1200GR2 while reducing rotational vibration. The platter has three layers - a die-cast aluminium core, a 2 mm brass top layer and heavy damping rubber covering the whole underside - with brass and aluminium rigidly combined. The body is a two-layer chassis of BMC and die-cast aluminium, resting on high-damping silicone insulators with adjustable feet. The S-shaped arm uses an aluminium tube in place of the magnesium tube of earlier models. The pitch adjustment and strobe of the DJ-oriented decks are left out, and electronic braking stops the platter.

Pairing

The arm accepts cartridges from 5.6 to 20.7 g without an auxiliary weight, 10.0 to 25.1 g with the small weight and 14.3 to 28.5 g with the large weight. Gold-plated phono terminals carry the signal onward to whatever phono stage is used. Supplied items include a dust cover, an EP adaptor, an overhang gauge, an earth lead and a phono cable, plus the auxiliary weight.
