The № 5105 is a belt-drive turntable from Mark Levinson, the Harman-owned American marque. It was designed and built in collaboration with Acoustic Signature of Germany and matches the styling of Mark Levinson's 5000 series electronics.

Key specs that matter

Speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, selected electronically. The drive is belt, with a digitally controlled 12 V synchronous motor in a mechanically isolated enclosure. The main bearing pairs a hardened steel axle with a maintenance-free sintered brass bushing and an oil-free composite base with integrated lubrication. The platter is solid aluminium, about 6.4 kg, with its underside coated in damping material. The tonearm has a 10 in effective length, a carbon fibre tube, a gimbal bearing and an aluminium headshell with integrated finger lift and azimuth adjustment. Mounting distance is 237.8 mm and overhang 16.2 mm. The turntable measures 438 x 395 x 154 mm and weighs 34 kg. The power supply accepts 90 to 260 V. US pricing was about USD 8,500.

Engineering and use context

The plinth and platter are machined from solid aluminium, and the heavy chassis rests on adjustable isolation feet, each with a mixed-material internal suspension, to decouple it from vibrations carried through the floor. The motor sits in its own isolated enclosure and drives the platter through a precision-ground square-section belt, bringing it up to speed within 7 seconds and keeping motor vibration away from the stylus. Electronic speed control provides both speeds at the touch of a button. The tonearm's carbon fibre tube is light and rigid, and its custom gimbal gives low friction movement in both planes. The arm allows adjustment of every set-up parameter, including VTA, although not on the fly, and anti-skating uses a thread and weight. The front panel follows the 5000 series design, with a one-inch-thick bead-blasted black anodised aluminium face contoured around a tinted glass display in a clear-anodised aluminium bezel, with illuminated speed and standby buttons. A built-in bubble level helps set the turntable perfectly flat. Mark Levinson's hourglass-shaped record weight is supplied.

Pairing

The № 5105 matches Mark Levinson's No. 5805 integrated amplifier and No. 5206 preamplifier, both of which have phono stages. The arm accepts most moving-coil designs.

Alternatives

Mark Levinson has no other turntable model, and the № 5105 is the brand's only design of this type.
