Luphonic of Germany builds the Model H2 as a complete record player, sold with the company's own K2 gimbal tonearm. Its unusual outline was chosen to keep possible interference from the platter bearing away from the arm, and it is operated without any buttons or switches.

Key specs that matter

Speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with rated speed stability of 0.04 percent WRMS under DIN. A microprocessor-controlled synchronous motor turns a sub-platter through a flat belt. The platter, cast from the same mineral composite as the chassis, stands 24 mm tall and weighs 1.9 kg, and its black surface is finished in a seven-stage grinding and polishing process. The chassis is white. The deck measures 440 mm wide, 140 mm high and 360 mm deep and sits on height-adjustable feet.

Engineering and use context

Luphonic builds the chassis as a resonance-optimised sandwich of solid surface material, a dense mineral composite chosen for its low resonance, with a layer of vibration-damping foam placed in the centre to keep motor noise and impact sound away from the record. Speed is chosen with a puck placed on the platter - depending on which side faces up, the deck runs at 33 or 45 rpm as soon as the puck is in place - and the selected speed appears in red digits on a display. The K2 arm is a radial design with horizontal and vertical Japanese precision ball bearings in a gimbal, a tube of carbon fibre plus a headshell produced by additive manufacturing from polyamide filled with tiny glass balls, combining low weight with high rigidity. Other parts are aluminium, stainless steel and POM, including a stainless steel counterweight. In the 9.5 inch version fitted here, effective length is 239.3 mm, overhang 17.3 mm and mounting distance 222 mm. The arm offers adjustment of height, tracking force, azimuth and bias, with the anti-skating range running from 0.21 g to 0.43 g. A silicone record mat is included. The K2 is also sold on its own, and in its longer 12 inch form it has an effective length of 304.8 mm, an overhang of 12.8 mm and a mounting distance of 292 mm. The current Luphonic range also lists the Model H1 and Model R3 decks.

Pairing

The K2 accepts cartridges weighing from 5 g to 14 g, which covers most light and medium moving magnet and moving coil designs, so buyers only need to add a pickup and a phono preamplifier suited to its output. A fixed-height rack shelf is enough, since the adjustable feet handle levelling.

Alternatives

Luphonic also makes the Model R2, a belt-driven deck with a two-layer chassis, the same K2 arm and a weight of 10 kg.
