The Greenwich is a direct-drive turntable from Wilson Benesch, the British company based in Sheffield, and it is the entry point to its GMT Collection. It shares the ALPHA-OMEGA drive platform of the Prime Meridian and the top GMT One, which debuted at Munich High End 2024, while structure, damping and isolation become more elaborate further up the range.
Key specs that matter
The motor is the OMEGA Direct Drive, a 15 in slotless synchronous motor with 21 precision-wound coils and 14 NdFeB magnets, controlled by the ALPHA Drive electronics. Speeds are 33, 45 and 78 rpm, with fine trim in 0.1 rpm steps. The turntable weighs 64 kg. It is controlled through the GMT Control App on a dedicated tablet. Production began in April 2026, with a lead time of 12 to 14 weeks.
Engineering and use context
The OMEGA motor was developed for the GMT platform in a research programme with Sheffield Hallam University. It uses a slotless design with a circumjacent radial-force architecture, which eliminates cogging and reduces torque ripple, the small speed fluctuations that conventional direct-drive motors produce as each magnet passes each pole. Its large diameter gives a uniform electromagnetic field, so the rotor stays synchronous without complex feedback correction. The motor operates at an ultra-low 4 Hz, below the range of hearing and below the wow and flutter region. It exerts no sideways force on the bearing, and a magnetic counterforce system reduces the effective dynamic mass acting on the Angstrom bearing, keeping contact forces within safe limits. The ALPHA Drive generates quartz-referenced multi-phase sine-wave signals and delivers controlled current to each motor pole. The optional VTA Control System, standard on the higher models, adds automatic tonearm lift and lowering and piezo-controlled adjustment of vertical tracking angle with nanometre resolution, with stored positions. Options include the Clear Platter and Rotor Upgrade, the R1 Carbon Rack, the GRAVITON Ti tonearm and the TESSELLATE Ti cartridge. Silver or gold accents can be specified for the caps on the glass top and the platter weights.
Pairing
The Greenwich is designed around Wilson Benesch's GRAVITON Ti tonearm and TESSELLATE Ti cartridge. Any high-quality external phono stage completes the system.
Alternatives
Wilson Benesch's Prime Meridian is the next turntable of the GMT range with the VTA Control System as standard.
