The G 2000 R is the belt-drive turntable in the R series from the German company T+A, built as a matching source for the other R components. It can be bought as a bare deck without an arm, or as a complete package with a modified Clearaudio carbon tonearm and an MC 2 moving-coil cartridge, and a phono stage module can be installed inside the chassis. In 2017 UK pricing was GBP 4,111 for the turntable alone, GBP 5,205 with arm and cartridge, and GBP 545 extra for the phono board.

A crystal-controlled synchronous motor turns the platter at 33 1/3 or 45 rpm, and the speed change is electronic, so the belt never has to be moved by hand. T+A quotes wow and flutter of plus or minus 0.02 percent and a rumble figure of 82 dB. The platter is pressure-cast aluminium weighing 3.8 kg, topped with a silicone rubber mat. The supplied MC 2 cartridge has a Micro Line stylus, 0.75 mV output, 30 dB channel separation at 1 kHz, a 20 Hz to 45 kHz range at -3 dB, 100 ohm terminal impedance, 9 um/mN compliance, 20 mN (2 g) tracking force and a weight of 8 g. The body measures 8.2 x 46 x 38 cm, rising to 16 cm high with the arm fitted, and the deck weighs 14 kg.

Engineering and use context

The heavy chassis is MDF bonded to an aluminium skin in a sandwich, with a structural sound absorber and isolation against resonance, and the whole body stands on four shock absorbers. A DSP optimises the voltage curve fed to the motor coils, and at start-up it brings the platter up to speed gradually before an indicator light confirms the target speed. The main bearing is non-inverted, with a hardened and polished steel shaft running in a close-tolerance brass bush machined to 5 um. A lid is supplied. Mains input covers 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, with 40 W consumption and less than 0.5 W in standby. Finishes are silver or black anodised aluminium in a brushed texture.

Pairing

T+A strongly recommends fitting the PHE-G R MC phono module in the turntable itself, and the plug-in board accepts both MM and MC pickups, with DIP switches used to configure it. Its R2-Link network connection ties it to other T+A R series components, so the deck powers on automatically together with the amplifier and can be operated through the system remote control. The arm is mounted at the factory and is not meant to be exchanged later, so the arm and cartridge choice is made at purchase.
