The DG-X is a belt-drive turntable from Vertere Acoustics, the British company led by its founder and CEO Touraj Moghaddam, who earlier co-founded Roksan and designed the Xerxes and Radius turntables and the Nima and Sara tonearms. It replaces the DG-1S as the entry model of the Dynamic Groove line, with the MG-1, SG-1 and RG-1 above it. In the US it costs USD 4,999 without a cartridge, USD 5,999 with the Sabre Lite, USD 7,499 with the Sabre, USD 8,999 with the Dark Sabre and USD 12,999 with the Mystic II moving-coil cartridge.

Key specs that matter

A 24-pole AC synchronous motor drives the platter through a bespoke silicone belt, and speeds of 33.3 and 45 rpm are selected electronically with an accuracy of ±0.2%. Power comes from the Vertere DC-2 desktop supply. The platter is machined aluminium alloy with a bonded PETG mat interface, an aluminium resonance-control disc and a cork, neoprene and nitrile layer underneath, and a 7.0 mm Technomat is included. The spindle is non-magnetic mirror-polished stainless steel with roundness and concentricity under 5 microns, running in a brass housing on a tungsten-carbide thrust ball. The Groove Runner X tonearm has an effective length of 240 mm, an overhang of 17.5 mm and an offset of 22.9 degrees, and it weighs 340 g. With the dust cover, the turntable measures about 457 x 381 x 127 mm and weighs about 7.7 kg. Finishes are gloss black, white and red.

Engineering and use context

A microprocessor-controlled drive with bridged balanced amplifiers feeds the motor, which lowers motor noise. The plinth is three layers of cast acrylic, and its clear middle layer is lit from inside. It rests on a black steel chassis with an aluminium resonance pad, one rear acetal pillar and two front aluminium pillars, three adjustable felt-padded feet and a four-position compression isolation system. The tonearm bearing is a tri-point design with three captive silicon nitride balls and a non-magnetic bearing point with adjustable VTA. The beam consists of two bonded five-layer polymer flat beams, and it can be removed and rests on a magnetic arm rest. A stainless weight on a thread gives anti-skating force that changes across the record, and the stainless counterweight has fine azimuth adjustment. Vertere Pulse wiring, gold-plated tags, gold RCA sockets with selectable shielding and grounding and a lift complete the arm. Setup takes under 15 minutes, helped by alignment markings on the platter.

Pairing

The Sabre Lite has a provisional output of 4.3 mV, so the moving-magnet packages suit any MM phono stage. Each package includes a Vertere Black Line, Redline or Verum RCA interconnect depending on the tier.

Alternatives

The Vertere MG-1 Magic Groove is the next turntable up in the range at USD 15,995.
