TechDAS of Japan announced the Air Force 20, a belt-driven record player with an air-bearing platter, in June 2026 with a public premiere at High End Vienna 2026. It sits below the Air Force Zero and One models and carries technology from both into a chassis of roughly 100 kg, with a Japanese domestic price starting at about JPY 8.47 million.

Key specs that matter

Two speeds are offered, 33.3 and 45 rpm, with wow and flutter quoted under 0.03 percent. The main unit measures 628 mm wide, 515 mm deep and 190 mm high. The separate APSU-20 power and air supply measures 430 x 460 x 144 mm, weighs 17 kg, draws 60 W and contains two independent air pumps. The platter floats on an air cushion only 10 microns thick, and a vacuum system draws the record flat against it so that disc and platter act as one mass. Two tonearm bases are supplied as standard, they accept both short and long arms, and the left and right bases are interchangeable.

Engineering and use context

The drive motor is taken from the Air Force Zero and reworked for the smaller body. It carries a flywheel that itself runs on an air bearing and couples to the motor through a non-contact magnetic interface, which TechDAS says multiplies the total moment of inertia fivefold to 12,300 kg cm2 and removes cogging. High-output 130 W amplifiers power the motor, and a double-sided polished polyester fibre flat belt links it to the platter. The platter has two layers - a non-magnetic SUS316L stainless steel main platter and an upper platter that the buyer chooses at purchase, in either A7075 Extra Super Duralumin or TP340 pure titanium, vacuum-bonded to the base layer. Suspension uses a monotube design derived from the Air Force Two, with an isolation spring sealed in damping oil that works against a free-piston oil chamber and a rubber diaphragm. The main frame is A7075 aluminium alloy, the suspension sections are A5052 alloy, and radial SUS304 stainless steel ribs reinforce a 60 kg stainless steel base frame.

Pairing

With two arm positions and support for long arms, the deck suits owners who want one arm for stereo LPs and another for mono pressings, or to compare a 9 inch and a 12 inch arm. The APSU-20 unit needs a shelf of its own nearby, and the total mass needs a very sturdy rack.

Alternatives

The TechDAS Air Force Zero is the larger model above it, weighing 340 kg with three separate power and air units.
