The 928 II is a belt-drive turntable from EMT Tontechnik, designed and manufactured by HiFiction AG in Turbenthal, Switzerland. Its name refers to the original EMT 928 of the 1970s, a compact belt-driven player made together with Thorens and fitted with the 929 tonearm, and EMT states that the belt drive was kept as a homage to that model. The new version was announced in 2022 at EUR 9,500 with deliveries planned before Christmas of that year. In the United States it costs USD 9,995 alone or USD 14,995 with the EMT 909 HI tonearm.
Key specs that matter
Three speeds are available - 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. Wow and flutter measured to IEC 386 is 0.07 percent at the two slower speeds and 0.10 percent at 78 rpm, and rumble to IEC 98 reaches -85 dB, -80 dB and -75 dB at the three speeds. Speed-up time is 10, 12 and 20 seconds. A 20 W DC motor drives a stepped aluminium platter that weighs 5.5 kg. On a full charge the battery lasts 40, 38 or 30 hours depending on speed. The deck measures 480 x 340 x 100 mm and weighs 23 kg.
Engineering and use context
The machined aluminium chassis stands on four decoupled spherical feet. The visible platter hides a stepped sub-platter that turns in a recessed chamber, and a round-section belt runs in a groove machined into its lower part. The motor, with a metal pulley, sits in its own sub-enclosure close to the sub-platter and is partly isolated from the chassis by a sub-suspension. EMT combines it with a high precision control loop circuit in a compact assembly to keep signal paths short. The key feature is the built-in battery supply, which lets the deck play while fully disconnected from the mains, and an automatic charger reports its state through a two-colour LED. The charger accepts 100 to 240 V mains. Two small potentiometers at the rear trim the speed, and there is no dust cover.
Pairing
The armboard is cut for EMT 9-inch tonearms with a mounting distance of 215 to 245 mm, and an adapter is available for 12-inch EMT arms. Other armboards can be ordered separately. EMT names the current 9-inch arm and all EMT cartridges as matching partners, and the set with the 909 HI arm also comes with an EMT Pure Black cartridge. The rear panel carries two RCA outputs, a ground terminal and an IEC mains socket.
Alternatives
EMT Tontechnik lists no other current turntable beside the 928 II, since its earlier broadcast turntable production ended when the last 950 was built in late 1989.
