The 9.5-inch Thuono tonearm is the shortest of the three versions of the arm made by Thuono Audio in Thiene, Italy, a company that grew out of a passion for analogue replay and presented its first turntable range in 2023 after more than five years of development. The 10-inch and 12-inch variants complete the arm range, and whichever length is chosen the list price stays at EUR 7,800 including VAT.
Key specs that matter
In this length the stylus sits 239 mm from the pivot and the pivot sits 222 mm from the spindle, which works out to an overhang of 17.24 mm with a 22 degree offset. Total length is 298 mm and the arm weighs 950 g, the lightest of the three. The vertical tracking angle can be varied over 55 mm. A 30 mm hole is required for mounting, the anti-skating force comes from a counterweight, the horizontal and vertical joints both turn on ceramic ball bearings, and the arm connects through a DIN plug.
Engineering and use context
Thuono chose its materials for their mechanical properties and for resonance behaviour. Although a cartridge moves very small masses, the fast vibrations it generates can set up tiny undulations along the arm, so the tube combines three layers - carbon fibre outside for its stiffness to weight ratio, an aluminium sleeve for rigidity and a titanium tube inside to limit mechanical losses. Brass components are part of the build and damping inserts sit at critical points. Adjustment is concentrated at the headshell, which provides fine azimuth control to keep the stylus square to the groove and a short slot for overhang correction, and the full height setting covers VTA. The standard headshell is duralumin, with titanium as an option that Thuono rates as stiffer. The wiring inside the tube is made of ultra-flexible pure silver conductors, chosen by the maker for high conductivity and low signal loss.
Pairing
According to Thuono the arm is tuned for its own turntables, and each TH series deck comes with one included, but a universal mounting system means it is not tied to them. A phono lead with a DIN connector at the arm end is needed, and Thuono lists a phono cable of its own along with the Magic Wood moving-coil cartridge, whose wooden body is cut from a 200 year old Italian olive tree and which was designed together with Sublima Audio Research.
Alternatives
The 10-inch Thuono tonearm has a 16 mm overhang, a 21.4 degree offset and a 313 mm overall length.
