The Point is a unipivot tonearm from Genuin Audio, the German company led by Thomas Wendt, which builds components designed by commissioned developers to form a complete system. It has a damped carbon arm tube and a reinterpreted unipivot bearing. At High End Munich it was listed at EUR 3,950.
Key specs that matter
The Point is a unipivot tonearm with an effective length of 254 mm, an offset angle of 21.6 degrees and an overhang of 16.2 mm. The arm tube is carbon fibre with internal damping. It is supplied on Genuin's Drive turntable, a sub-chassis deck on torsion bars with its own phono amplification, and it was shown with Genuin's Sting nude moving-coil cartridge.
Engineering and use context
A unipivot tonearm rests on a single point, a needle in a cup, so the bearing has almost no play and very low friction in every direction. The Point was developed for Genuin by Helmut Thiele as an evolution of a tonearm he designed in 1978. Its bearing tip is an adjusting screw with a welded, hardened ball whose centre stays the fixed pivot point, and the bearing is damped to prevent the typical unipivot tilting. VTA is set by rotating the base top, which is guided by an M8 thread and three O-rings. Two low counterweights provide the basic balance and a central weight sets tracking force, while azimuth uses a transverse weight and anti-skating is applied by a thread weight in the plane of the bearing and the stylus. The aluminium headshell is bonded to the thin-walled carbon tube. Genuin calls its design a reinterpreted unipivot, aimed at maximum accuracy and transmission free from vibration. Carbon fibre is stiff and light, and internal damping suppresses resonances in the tube so they are not passed back to the cartridge. On the Drive turntable, the Point's signal goes to a phono stage built into the turntable itself, a Genuin principle, since amplifying the fine MC signal directly behind the tonearm cable avoids two metres of cable before the first gain stage. The Sting cartridge has no body shell and carries a magnetic dust cleaner. Genuin's products are designed by commissioned specialists, and owners can speak with those developers at shows. Genuin was established in 1998 and first showed its complete range at High End 2017. At Munich the Point was shown mounted with the EUR 2,950 Sting, on the EUR 9,950 Drive.
Pairing
The Point is supplied with Genuin's Drive turntable and suits the brand's Sting MC cartridge.
Alternatives
Genuin Audio makes no other tonearm beside the Point.
