The Magnify is a 9-inch tonearm from Clearaudio of Erlangen, Germany, whose bearing combines high-precision balls with magnets in a hybrid arrangement. Clearaudio designed it to keep playback free from interference and resonance while making installation and fine adjustment simpler than with its earlier arms. The arm is also intended to accept a wide spread of cartridges.

Key specs that matter

Effective length is 239.3 mm, and the distance from pivot to spindle is 222 mm. Overhang is 17.31 mm and the offset angle 25.54 degrees, with the inner null point at 66.04 mm and the outer one at 120.9 mm. The maximum tracking angle error along the radius is given as 0.123 degrees per cm, and the mean skating factor between radii of 133 mm and 83.9 mm is 0.49. Cartridges from 4.7 g up to 22 g can be balanced. Overall length is 345 mm, the arm fits a Clearaudio mounting with a 24.85 mm bore, which is also described as Linn compatible, and total weight is 620 g including the Turboweight counterweight. Signal leaves the arm through 1.1 m of Clearaudio Sixtream Super Wire ending in MPC RCA plugs, and the factory warranty lasts five years after registration.

Engineering and use context

Clearaudio credits the hybrid bearing both for the quiet, resonance-optimised running of the arm and for the easier set-up. The geometry figures above describe the alignment the arm is built for, with the two null points marking the radii at which the stylus has no tracking angle error. In this hybrid layout a magnetic bearing controls horizontal rotation and a ball bearing handles vertical movement, and anti-skating is also applied magnetically. The arm tube is braided carbon fibre, the headshell is aluminium, and azimuth is set with a screw at the base of the headshell. The counterweight has an eccentric design. With the optional VTA-Lifter, vertical tracking angle can be changed even while a record is playing. Internally the Magnify uses Clearaudio Direct Wire in one continuous run from the cartridge clips to the plugs of the tonearm cable, without a break at the arm base.

Pairing

The 4.7 to 22 g range covers most MM and MC cartridges, from light moving-coil designs such as the 7 g Clearaudio Concerto V2 to heavier bodies like the 11 g Talisman V2 Gold. Other turntables need an arm board cut for the Clearaudio mounting and geometry. The MPC RCA termination connects to any standard phono input.

Alternatives

The Clearaudio Universal 9 inch covers a wider balance range of 2.9 to 24.8 g and weighs 745 g with its counterweight.
