Remton Audio of Prague makes the V383 as a tube phono stage, and each unit is handcrafted in Czechia. Remton rates it for MM and MI pickups as well as MC types with high output and uses a single fixed gain setting. In Remton's range it sits below the limited 481, which the brand places between the V383 and the V-LCR, and it shares the full-width chassis used by the 481 series.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 46 dB, and the unit has one single-ended input. Input impedance is adjustable from 17 kOhm to 100 kOhm. Capacitive loading can be chosen from 0, 47, 100, 147, 220, 267 or 367 pF. Output impedance is 600 ohm. The RIAA frequency response is given as 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB. Three matched JJ ECC83S valves are used. The case measures 386 x 295 x 85 mm and weighs 7 kg.

Engineering and use context

Remton forms the RIAA curve passively, and the circuit works with zero negative feedback, so the valve stages run open loop. Remton lists low noise among the design aims. Where the 481 needs four ECC81 valves for 42 dB, the V383 reaches its higher gain with three ECC83S. High voltage reaches the valves via a soft-start DC high voltage rail, supplied by a toroidal power transformer. Components are hand picked, according to the maker, and every signal socket has gold plating. Without step-up transformers or a switchable MC stage, the design stays simple, with one signal path from input to output. Remton grants two years of warranty on parts and labour, and 90 days on the valves. The RIAA tolerance is slightly wider than that of the 481, which also has a lower output impedance.

Pairing

The fixed gain fits pickups whose output lies in the typical MM range, as well as high output moving coil models. Low output moving coil cartridges call for a separate step-up device placed before this stage. The impedance range starting at 17 kOhm gives room to load an MM or MI cartridge below the usual 47 kOhm when its maker suggests it. The output is best connected to a preamplifier line input with a high input impedance, using interconnects of moderate length, and the total capacitance on the input should include the tonearm cable.

Alternatives

The Remton V383 MK2 is the later Remton version for MM and MC use, adding loading down to 36 ohm and gain settings of 46, 66 and 72 dB in the same size chassis.
