MoFi Electronics built the UltraPhono Pro as a single-input, all-analogue phono preamplifier. It was created together with audio engineer Peter Madnick, and MoFi describes it as a streamlined version of the core architecture of its MasterPhono. The announced US list price was USD 2,495, with availability from February 2026.

Key specs that matter

Its one input is an RCA socket working in voltage mode. Three gain settings are available at the RCA outputs - 40, 52 and 65 dB - and the balanced XLR outputs add 6 dB, giving 46, 58 and 71 dB. Five resistive loading values can be selected - 100, 300, 500, 1,000 and 47,000 ohms. Output impedance is 230 ohms balanced and 115 ohms unbalanced. Frequency response is 10 Hz to 50 kHz within 0.2 dB, and RIAA accuracy is held within 0.05 dB. MoFi quotes a maximum signal-to-noise ratio, A-weighted, of 93 dB for MM and 85 dB for MC. The case measures 432 x 64 x 288 mm and the unit weighs 3.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

Both input and output stages are fully discrete, using J-FET and MOSFET devices. The signal path is fully balanced, DC coupled and servo-controlled from the high-pass filter through to the outputs. The RIAA network is passive, without feedback, with polypropylene film and foil capacitors matched to better than 1 percent, while critical resistors are specified at 0.1 or 0.5 percent tolerance. Power comes from a seven-stage regulated balanced supply. Loading is switched by hermetically sealed relays with gold-on-gold contacts. Gain and loading are both set from the front panel, an arrangement MoFi chose so that cartridge setup is faster. Further front-panel functions cover mono, a subsonic filter, mute and a dim setting.

Pairing

MoFi designed the unit to take both cartridge families, MM and MC, through its single input, so there is no separate MM or MC socket at the back, and the cartridge type is handled entirely by the gain and loading choices. The XLR outputs feed preamplifiers or integrated amplifiers equipped with balanced line inputs, while the RCA outputs are for single-ended inputs. Among MoFi's own cartridges, the UltraGold MC has an output of 0.4 mV and calls for a load of 100 ohms or more, while the UltraTracker moving-magnet model delivers 3.5 mV and has an impedance of 47 kilohms, and each value is available on the front-panel selector.
