The R35 is the most capable MM/MC phono preamplifier in the Primare catalogue, a full-width component from the Swedish maker in Limhamn sharing the 430 mm width of the I25 amplifier and A35.2 power amplifier. It sits between an MM or MC pickup and the line inputs of an amplifier, with both RCA and balanced XLR outputs, and Primare lists it at EUR 1,600.

Key specs that matter

One stereo RCA input with a ground terminal takes the turntable. Gain is set with a three-position switch. For MM it is 36, 40 or 44 dB at the RCA output and 42, 46 or 50 dB at the XLR output, and for MC it is 62, 66 or 70 dB via RCA and 68, 72 or 76 dB via XLR. MM loading is 47 kohm, or 2.5 kohm for high-output moving coils, with 100, 200, 300 or 400 pF of capacitance. MC loading runs from 10 ohm to 47 kohm in 21 steps, with 100 pF or 1 nF. Signal to noise is 85 dB for MM with a 5 mV input and 76 dB for MC with 0.5 mV, both A-weighted at 1 kHz. Engineering and use context

A fully isolated power supply keeps the sensitive gain circuits away from noise. The toroidal transformer has one winding per channel, and inside the case metal shields divide the transformer section from the signal boards, which sit in the opposite corner. Primare uses a dual mono layout with discrete lead-free parts from Japanese and American semiconductor makers. Loading is set by DIP switches on the rear panel beside the MM/MC selector. A subsonic filter rolls off at 12 dB per octave from a 12 Hz corner to limit the effect of warped records. The RCA outputs have a 100 ohm source impedance, the XLR outputs 200 ohm, and maximum output reaches 11 V rms. The unit draws 15 to 20 W in use and less than 0.5 W in standby, drops into standby after 20 minutes without signal unless that function is disabled at the front button, and is finished in black or titanium.

Pairing

XLR connection makes sense with a preamplifier or integrated model that offers balanced sockets, while the RCA pair feeds any ordinary line input. With the highest MC gain setting, even an MC pickup of very small output voltage needs no step-up transformer. With 3.5 mm trigger jacks for in and out, the R35 can power up in step with other Primare units.
