The PH 2.10 from Canor Audio of Presov, Slovakia, is an all-valve phono preamplifier that accepts MM as well as MC cartridges. It uses the minimum number of amplification steps needed to apply a purely passive RIAA correction, and it works without global feedback.
Key specs that matter
Inside are two 12AX7 and two 12AT7WC. For moving-magnet cartridges the gain is 46 dB and the load capacitance can be set to 50, 150, 270, 370, 520, 620, 740 or 840 pF. For moving-coil cartridges the gain rises to 70 dB and the input impedance is selectable at 10, 20, 40, 80, 150, 300, 600 or 1,200 ohm. There are two single-ended inputs, a moving-magnet input and a moving-coil input, carried on four RCA sockets, plus a pair of RCA outputs, and the active input is chosen from the front panel. The output impedance is quoted as below 500 ohm. Canor lists total harmonic distortion under 0.2 percent at 1 V RMS for both input types, a signal-to-noise ratio of 84 dB in MM mode and 80 dB in MC mode, and RIAA accuracy within plus or minus 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The chassis measures 435 x 120 x 405 mm and weighs 14 kg net.
Engineering and use context
The first and second amplification stages are built around the 12AX7 triodes, with a subsonic filter placed between them, and the third and fourth stages use the 12AT7 types. That filter works at 18 Hz with a slope of 18 dB per octave, keeping very low-frequency disturbances such as record warp away from the following stages. The passive RIAA network consists only of polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors. Moving-coil cartridges reach the valve circuit through a Lundahl step-up transformer rather than an extra active gain stage. To keep mechanical hum away, the transformer core is vacuum impregnated and the whole transformer is encapsulated in an anti-vibration compound. The chassis is a massive welded structure reinforced by an internal partition, which gives mechanical support and also shields the circuits electrically. The unit draws 50 VA from a 230 V, 50 Hz supply.
Pairing
The output pair goes to a line input on the partnering preamp or integrated amp. Because the MM and MC inputs are separate, one turntable fitted with an MM cartridge and a second arm or deck carrying an MC pickup can stay connected together, each with its own loading setting, and switching between them happens on the front panel.
Alternatives
The Canor PH 1.10 is the other tube phono stage in the Canor catalogue.
