The PH-10 is a fully analogue MM and MC phono stage from Gold Note of Italy, built around adjustable equalisation curves, cartridge loading and gain. It is operated with a Single Knob Control, a rotary control that works together with a colour display and lets every function be changed in real time without interrupting playback. The US price is USD 2,395, and the case is offered in gold, silver or black.

Key specs that matter

Two independent stereo RCA inputs accept MM or MC cartridges, while the output side has a single unbalanced RCA set plus a single balanced XLR set, the XLR delivering 12 dB more level. Gain runs from 45 dB for MM to 65 dB for MC, with four trim options of minus 3 dB, 0 dB, plus 3 dB and plus 6 dB. Nine load settings are offered - 10, 22, 47, 100, 220, 470 and 1000 ohm, 22 kOhm and 47 kOhm - and for MM use the capacitance is a fixed 220 pF. Input sensitivity spans 0.1 mV for MC to 10 mV for MM. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.3 dB, extending to 50 kHz with the Enhanced curves, and total harmonic distortion stays under 0.05% at 1 kHz, signal to noise ratio is 89 dB and dynamic response is 105 dB. Output impedance is 50 ohm.

Engineering and use context

Three equalisation curves can be chosen - RIAA, Decca London and American Columbia - and each is available with an Enhanced option. Gold Note says the Enhanced versions come from a proprietary design derived from the Neumann master cutting machine project. The selected curve appears as a graph on the display. An infrasonic filter works at 10 Hz with a slope of 36 dB per octave. Because the two inputs have independently adjustable settings, two tonearms carrying different pickups may remain wired in simultaneously, and their settings remain stored in memory when the unit is switched off. The internal 10 W Super Linear supply runs on 100 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, and standby consumption is below 0.5 W. The unit measures 200 mm wide, 80 mm tall and 260 mm deep and weighs 3 kg net. Boxed, it measures 290 x 180 x 390 mm and weighs 4 kg, and the mains fuse is rated 0.5 A.

Pairing

Gold Note offers the PSU-10, a dedicated external power supply that connects to the PH-10 through a PSU Link cable, as an upgrade path. The maker states that the PH-10 reaches its full potential with this supply, which uses a super inductive design.
