The OASIS is a valve phono stage from Manley Laboratories, hand assembled in Southern California. Introduced in 2024 as the replacement for the Chinook, it shares its design approach with the Steelhead and lists at USD 3,999. The front is a CNC milled aluminium faceplate.
Key specs that matter
Four 6922 dual triodes are used, two in the gain stage and two in the output stage, and 6DJ8, 7308 or ECC88 types can be substituted. Gain is selectable at 45, 50, 60 or 65 dB. Resistive loading offers 31 settings from 26 to 800 ohm plus the standard 47 kohm, and capacitive loading gives seven choices from 50 to 350 pF. Output impedance is 104 ohm, with a minimum recommended load of 2,500 ohm. RIAA deviation stays within 0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Dynamic range is 102 dB typical A-weighted, crosstalk is 82 dB at 1 kHz or 10 kHz, and noise is quoted as -84 dBu at 45 dB gain, -74 dBu at 60 dB and -69 dBu at 65 dB. THD+N is typically 0.01% at 45 dB of gain. The case measures about 432 x 356 x 89 mm and weighs about 9.1 kg.
Engineering and use context
No integrated circuits sit in the signal path. The gain stages couple directly to a further 6922 working as the output driver in a White Follower circuit, a topology chosen for low output impedance and strong current delivery into cables and the following preamplifier. Equalisation is handled by passive RIAA networks rather than active feedback. Rear panel DIP switches configure gain and loading, using a three position capacitance selector and a five position resistance selector whose steps combine into the full range. Power comes from Manley Power, a proprietary switch mode supply that replaces the linear design of the Chinook and was developed for low noise. Compared with that predecessor, which had two internal gain settings and an output impedance of 91 ohm, the OASIS doubles the number of gain steps. Inputs and outputs are single-ended RCA jacks, Teflon insulated and gold plated.
Pairing
The two lower gain settings suit moving magnet and high output coil designs, while the two higher ones cover low output moving coil cartridges. Its output can feed the line level stage of a separate preamp or of an integrated model, provided that input respects the minimum recommended load, and the low source impedance also allows longer interconnect runs.
Alternatives
Manley's higher tier phono preamplifier is the Steelhead.
