The LP2.1 is a Lamm Industries phono preamplifier with vacuum tube circuitry that offers separate MM and MC inputs, each with its own gain setting. It replaced the earlier LP2 and changed the tube line-up, adopting the 6C3P and 6C45P-E types also used in the LP1 Signature phono stage. Every stage operates in pure Class A, using single-ended stages and high-current drive capability. It comes in a standard version and a Deluxe version.

Key specs that matter

Voltage gain at 1 kHz is typically 40 dB, a factor of 100, for moving magnet, and 60 dB, a factor of 1000, for moving coil. Typical input sensitivity is 1.25 mV RMS on the MM input and 0.125 mV RMS on the MC input for 0.125 V RMS of output at 1 kHz. The MM input presents 47 kohm shunted by 200 pF, while the MC input presents 400 ohm. Overload arrives at 225 mV RMS, plus or minus 15 mV, for MM and 22.5 mV RMS for MC. Output impedance is typically 2.3 kohm, RIAA accuracy from 20 Hz to 20 kHz is within 0 and minus 0.5 dB, and signal to noise is typically 83 dB.

Engineering and use context

In each channel one 6C3P triode works in the first stage and one 6C45P-E in the second, and a 6X4 acts as the full-wave rectifier, giving five tubes in total. The power supply combines one transformer, two chokes, the vacuum rectifier and a solid-state regulator, and it accepts mains from 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz. Typical consumption is 75 W, and the maker specifies a warm-up time of at least 45 minutes before the unit reaches its rated performance. All signal connections use gold-plated RCA sockets, with two inputs per channel for the two cartridge types, and the unit is unbalanced throughout. The front panel is 483 mm wide, the case stands 114 mm high and 352 mm deep, and the front handles add 35 mm. The standard version weighs 10 kg, while the Deluxe version weighs 18.8 kg.

Pairing

The MC gain and load are aimed at MC pickups of moderate output, while the MM input covers conventional magnetic cartridges. Given the fairly high output impedance, a line preamplifier with a high input impedance such as the Lamm LL2.1 is a sensible match, and short interconnects help. Because of the long warm-up, owners typically power the unit up some time ahead of a session, and the vacuum rectifier plus chokes add to the heat produced inside a closed rack, so open shelving gives the tubes room to breathe.

Alternatives

The Lamm LP1 Signature is a further Lamm phono stage, built with the same 6C3P and 6C45P-E tube types.
