The Kirke LE is a Triode-FET phono preamplifier from Aries Cerat, a Cypriot high-end audio brand founded by owner and designer Stavros Danos in 2010. Positioned as a serious contender dedicated to analogue reproduction, the Kirke uses more refined, evolved circuits drawn from the brand's top-of-the-line Talos Limited Edition phono preamp, combined with the Gen2 TriodeFet circuits developed for Aries Cerat's flagship Ianus Series designs.

Key specs that matter

The tube stages alone deliver 64-68dB gain, combined with dual onboard customised, fully balanced Step-Up Transformers offering a further selectable 12-26dB, for a total possible gain of 76-94dB - substantial headroom capable of amplifying any cartridge's signal to its full potential and maximum dynamic range, all while maintaining an exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio. The input stage is a proprietary differential tube design, evolved from the Talos LE circuit, using two independent full tube stages per channel operating in differential mode - each channel employs two E280F/6J11PE super tubes, mounted on Aries Cerat's own special Vibration Isolation sockets specifically to minimise microphonic noise. These tubes are loaded with a special transformer using a proprietary MU/permalloy core blend with fully geometrically and electrically balanced windings. The differential input stage can be fed either directly from the cartridge in differential mode, via floating RCA or true balanced XLR inputs, or through the custom SUT transformers, which themselves output a true balanced signal to fully exploit the differential tube input stage's noise-cancelling advantage - amplifying an extremely low-level signal differentially cancels common-mode noise picked up anywhere from the cartridge body through to the phono stage inputs. Output impedance is an exceptionally low 1 ohm, and the output stage is potent enough to deliver 12W directly into a loudspeaker if connected, though Kirke is emphatically not designed or intended for speaker-driving duties - this figure simply illustrates the output stage's considerable capability. The unit ships with no internal cartridge loading fitted as standard.

Sound and use context

Expect exceptional noise cancellation and a microphonic-free, linear presentation from the input stage - Aries Cerat states every step necessary was taken to provide the best possible noise-cancelling, linear performance, since the input stage remains the single most crucial point for retrieving and preserving information from the cartridge before anything downstream can improve upon it.

Pairing

The exceptionally high total gain range and dual balanced SUT options accommodate cartridges across a wide output range, and the true balanced output design rewards a downstream preamplifier or amplifier accepting balanced XLR connections directly.

Alternatives

Aries Cerat's Talos Limited Edition and Talos Signature phono preamplifiers sit within the same broader lineage this Kirke's circuit technology derives from, worth comparing directly with the brand or a specialist dealer given the considerable investment and bespoke nature of Aries Cerat's entire phono catalogue.
