The Intro MM is the entry-level phono stage of Edwards Audio, which produces turntables, amplifiers and phono stages in Britain. Shown at the North West Audio Show 2025 alongside the Apprentice MM Mk4, it takes the original Apprentice design back to its basics while adding the upgrades developed since. It is intended as an affordable path into proper vinyl playback.

Key specs that matter

It has one moving-magnet input with a fixed 47 kohm load. Gain is 42.5 dB, output impedance is below 10 ohms and signal-to-noise ratio is 80 dB. Frequency response is 10 Hz to 100 kHz. Input capacitance is 120 pF, maximum input level is 72 mV and maximum output is 7.5 V RMS. RIAA accuracy is within 0.25 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It uses an external low-noise AC plug-top power supply and consumes 1 W, protected by a T250mA anti-surge 20 mm fuse.

Engineering and use context

The Intro MM shares its gain and input loading with the Apprentice MM Mk4, the more costly sibling. The Edwards Apprentice circuit, derived from the MM1, uses passive equalisation for the treble and active equalisation for the bass, with a second amplifier stage that buffers the equalisation network. This buffer gives the very low output impedance, which is rare in phono stages at this level and lets the Intro MM drive long interconnects and amplifier inputs of any impedance without loss. The case is non-magnetic aluminium, which avoids the interference a steel case can introduce into the high-gain circuitry. The plug-top supply keeps the mains transformer away from the phono circuit. The compact enclosure is built in the UK and is available in black, grey, red, white, green and blue. The launch price was GBP 99.95 including VAT. The larger Apprentice MM Mk4, shown at the same event, moved to an internal power supply and cut consumption from 3 W to 1 W, while keeping the same RIAA-based circuit concept. The Intro MM gives owners of a basic turntable a clear upgrade over phono stages built into budget amplifiers, and it can later be replaced by the Apprentice.

Pairing

The gain suits moving-magnet cartridges of about 3 to 6 mV, connecting to a line-level input of any amplifier. It pairs naturally with Edwards Audio's own turntables and with entry-level turntables that lack a built-in phono stage.
