The Heritage PH100 is a phono preamplifier from French maker YBA that joined the Heritage range in September 2018, introduced in response to demand from buyers for a more affordable phono stage from the brand. It has since been discontinued. The unit is narrow yet full depth, a shape YBA chose so that the weight of connected cables cannot destabilise the small box.
Key specs that matter
Three cartridge types are supported, each with its own loading and amplification. Moving magnet pickups see 47 kohm with 45 dB of gain. Low output MC cartridges receive a 2 to 100 ohm load and 65 dB of amplification, and high output moving coil models get 47 kohm with 50 dB, so the MM and high output MC settings share one load value and differ only in amplification. THD+N stays under 0.005 percent, and YBA quotes more than 90 dB of signal to noise, A weighted and measured at 40 dB input gain. RIAA accuracy is held within 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. There are two RCA inputs and a single RCA output. The case is finished in brushed aluminium with acrylic, measures 125 mm wide, 117.5 mm deep and 360 mm high, and weighs 2.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
YBA builds its own moving coil transformer for this model, designed around the specific characteristics of moving coil cartridges. The choice between MM and MC operation is made with a switch on the front of the unit. At the back a toggle switch has to be set for the cartridge family, and when that is done the circuitry detects by itself whether a low or a high output moving coil pickup is connected and changes its settings to suit. The same principle of automatic moving coil detection and an in-house transformer appears in the larger Genesis PH1 and Passion PH150 phono stages from the brand, so the PH100 brings that approach to a smaller and lower priced box. In contrast to those two models, the Heritage unit has no balanced output and relies on its RCA connection alone.
Pairing
The single RCA output can be wired to an unbalanced line input on either an integrated amplifier or a preamplifier. Its two inputs allow two turntables, or a turntable with two tonearms, to stay wired at the same time. The Heritage series gathers YBA components in the same slim, upright format and brushed aluminium finish, so matching boxes can be combined into one system.
Alternatives
The YBA Genesis PH1 is a battery-powered phono preamplifier that adds a balanced output next to its RCA pair.
