The Gratia MM/MC is an op-amp based phono preamplifier in the Evolution series of Fezz Audio, the Polish amplifier brand linked to the transformer manufacturer Toroidy.pl. Supported pickups are MM, high-output MC and standard MC types, and the unit offers two inputs so that two turntables or two tonearms can stay connected in parallel.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 50 dB in the MM and MC low setting. Input impedance is 47 kOhm for MM, while the MC section covers a range from 50 ohm to 1 kOhm. There are two inputs and one output. Total harmonic distortion over 20 Hz to 20 kHz is below 0.005 percent, and noise lies more than 92 dB below the signal. The unit includes a subsonic filter and a stereo or mono mode switch. Power consumption is 12 W. The chassis measures 355 x 380 x 95 mm and weighs 8 kg. European prices ranged from EUR 1,200 to 1,350 depending on the chosen colour.

Engineering and use context

The amplification section is based on the Burson Audio Supreme V5i, a discrete operational amplifier. The power supply is stabilised and uses a toroidal transformer of the Supreme Audio Grade from Toroidy.pl, which Fezz describes as the core of the extended power path. Anti-vibration feet are matched to the weight of the device, and the front carries a backlit logo in a vintage style. Seven colour finishes are offered, among them Sunlight, Black Ice, Moonlight and Republika. A subsonic filter cuts infrasonic content from warped discs or tonearm motion before they reach the amplifier, and the mono position sums the two channels when playing mono pressings. Extensive settings let the owner adapt the stage to different cartridge types, and the wide MC impedance range offers a wide choice of loads for moving-coil designs. In the Fezz phono range the Gratia sits between the compact Gaia Mini and the tube-equipped Gratia Prestige MK2.

Pairing

The pair of inputs lets the owner keep a moving-magnet deck and a moving-coil deck wired up at once and switch between them. The single output connects to an integrated amplifier, preamplifier or receiver input without phono equalisation. A Fezz tube or Torus amplifier in a matching finish forms a set from one maker, and the full-size width lines up with other full-size components on a shelf or rack.

Alternatives

The Fezz Audio Gaia Mini MM/MC is a smaller and simpler phono stage from the brand with fixed loading and 53 dB of gain.
