The Fono MM MK5 is a moving magnet phono stage from Rega, launched in a new case on 15 November 2021 alongside the Fono MC MK4, at GBP 220 or USD 445. It is a compact, externally powered stage for turntables with moving magnet cartridges, including Rega's own models, and it shares its RIAA approach with the phono sections of Rega's integrated amplifiers.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 41.4 dB, sensitivity 1.7 mV for rated output, and the input presents 47 kohms in parallel with 100 pF. Maximum input is 60 mV. Output impedance is 200 ohms with a minimum load of 5 kohms. Frequency response runs from 15 Hz at -3 dB to 100 kHz at -0.2 dB, and RIAA accuracy is ±0.2 dB. Power comes from a 24 V AC supply at 80 mA. The case is 180 mm wide, 45 mm high and 150 mm deep, and the unit weighs 650 g.

Engineering and use context

Its fully discrete input stage follows a cascaded complementary layout, which uses matched pairs of transistors of opposite polarity rather than an integrated op-amp. RIAA equalisation is split across two stages, so the bass boost and treble cut are shared between separate circuits instead of being applied in one, and the equalisation network uses polypropylene capacitors, while polyester capacitors sit in the signal path. A maximum input of 60 mV gives a large margin above the typical output of MM cartridges, which reduces the risk of overload on loud passages or record clicks. The 47 kohm and 100 pF input matches the standard loading for moving magnet cartridges. Because the power supply is external, the mains transformer is kept away from the circuit board. The aluminium case introduced in 2021 matches those of the Fono MC and the Neo turntable power supply, so the three units sit together as a set. Rega describes the two-stage equalisation as a way to minimise interaction between the parts of the RIAA curve. Frequency response and RIAA accuracy are both specified into a 50 kohm load, and the stage carries Rega's lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects.

The Fono MM MK5 connects between a turntable with an MM cartridge, such as a Rega Planar with a Rega Carbon, Nd3 or Exact cartridge, and a line input of any amplifier. It is useful with amplifiers that lack a phono stage, including many modern streaming amplifiers, and its compact case can stand beside the record deck.
