The FL Phono is a two-box phono preamplifier from Audia Flight, the Italian manufacturer based in Civitavecchia near Rome. It applies the company's current-feedback circuit philosophy to vinyl playback, with a separate power supply chassis and plug-in input boards that can be configured for moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridges and changed later as a system evolves.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 60 to 64dB for MC and 40 to 44dB for MM, depending on the gain setting. Two single-ended inputs are provided, fitted with MM or MC boards to order, and MC loading can be set to 7, 9, 10, 23, 30, 90, 100 or 980 ohms. Output impedance is 500 ohms, with both single-ended and balanced XLR outputs. Frequency response extends from 5Hz to 120kHz, RIAA accuracy is within +/-0.1dB, channel imbalance is below 0.04dB and stereo separation exceeds 95dB at 10kHz. THD is below 0.05% and signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 90dB (A-weighted).

Engineering and use context

MM and MC cartridges have very different output levels and source impedances, so Audia Flight uses a different input board for each rather than one compromise circuit. The MC board is a low-noise transistor input stage with 60dB of gain and very low output offset, while the MM board uses a differential transistor input stage with 40dB of gain. Loading is set by gold jumpers placed right next to the input stage, keeping the signal path short. A gold-contact relay input selector follows the first gain stage, and the RIAA equalisation is passive, built with 1% tolerance polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors. A switchable IEC subsonic filter is available at this point. The second gain stage uses Audia Flight's MCF NG1 current-feedback module, redesigned for lower noise and higher speed, with gain adjustable from 24 to 34dB. The separate supply houses a 50VA toroidal transformer for the analogue stages and a 15VA transformer for relays and logic, and front-panel commands reach the relays through opto-isolators so control circuitry has no electrical connection to the signal path. The audio chassis carries six regulated supplies in total, and DC offset protection disconnects the output if a fault occurs.

Pairing

The balanced XLR output suits fully balanced preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers, while the RCA output covers conventional line inputs. The wide MC loading range covers low-impedance moving-coil cartridges, and a mono switch sums both channels for mono records played with a stereo cartridge.

Alternatives

Audia Flight makes no other standalone phono preamplifier, and the FL Phono stands alone in its catalogue.
