The Canta Phono Preamplifier opens the Canta Series from VinnieRossi, the American company of designer Vinnie Rossi, whose earlier work runs from the Red Wine Audio iPod modification of around 2006 to the cost-no-object Brama Series. The maker positions this solid-state MM and MC phono stage as a link between the new Canta range and the Brama electronics. It was first shown at the Hong Kong and Taipei audio shows in August 2026, with the first units due to ship at the end of September at a provisional US price of USD 17,995.

Key specs that matter

Gain is set in four steps for moving magnet cartridges - 36, 40, 46 and 52 dB - and in four steps for moving coil types - 56, 60, 66 and 72 dB. The MM input presents 47k ohms with a choice of 100, 200, 300 or 400 pF of capacitance. For MC there are twenty load values - 10, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 150, 180, 200, 250, 400, 600 and 1,000 ohms. RIAA accuracy is quoted within plus or minus 0.1 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Maximum output reaches 10 V RMS and output impedance stays under 100 ohms. The case measures 413 x 324 x 70 mm and weighs about 10 kg, and the mains input accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz.

Engineering and use context

Instead of IC op-amps, the input is a fully discrete JFET transconductance and transimpedance stage, and the whole circuit follows a dual-mono plan in which each channel is built as an independent section, with no valves anywhere in the signal path. Power comes from a Belleson super-regulated supply. A switchable third-order subsonic high-pass filter at 20 Hz can be engaged for warped records. The enclosure is CNC-machined from a solid block of aluminium, which the company credits with mechanical rigidity, resonance control, electromagnetic shielding and grounding integrity. A high-resolution display on the front panel lets the owner change gain, loading and other parameters without reaching behind the unit, and every setting is kept in memory after the power is disconnected.

Pairing

Either cartridge family can be used, and the connections come as balanced XLR and single-ended RCA on the input and the output side. VinnieRossi states that the phono stage can be incorporated into a Brama system or used as part of a complete Canta system, and the Canta range is scheduled to add an integrated amplifier in September, a preamplifier in October and a stereo power amplifier in November.

Alternatives

The nearest phono option from the same maker is the L2 Phono module, an MM and MC stage fitted inside the L2i SE integrated amplifier with two MC inputs and one MM input at an option price of USD 3,495.
