The Rosewood Signature is a hand-assembled moving coil cartridge from Koetsu that keeps the natural rosewood housing of the entry Rosewood but is built from the most tightly matched coil and core sets the Japanese maker selects. Production today is led by second-generation cartridge master Fumihiko Sugano, and the Signature forms the step between the plain wood model and the lacquered Platinum version.
Key specs that matter
Rated output sits at 0.4 mV at 5 cm/sec, which places it in low output moving coil territory. Koetsu specifies a load between 75 and 500 ohm and a vertical tracking force from 1.8 to 2.0 g. The body weighs 9.18 g in the maker's current listing. The generator combines a permendur magnet, copper coil windings and a boron cantilever, while the housing is left as unlacquered natural rosewood. In the US the Signature has been listed at around USD 5,495, well below the lacquered Platinum version. A diamond cantilever is available from Koetsu as a paid option for buyers who prefer it to boron.
Engineering and use context
What separates the Signature from the standard Rosewood is selection rather than a new material list. Koetsu pairs coils and cores that measure closest to one another, a process that narrows tolerances between the two channels. The magnet circuit also moves to permendur, an iron cobalt alloy, where the lower Rosewood uses a different magnet type. The bare wood finish keeps the build simple and leaves the rosewood grain visible, unlike the Urushi pieces, which cover the same timber in Japanese lacquer. Because each cartridge is put together by hand in limited numbers, availability tends to follow the pace of the workshop in Japan rather than a fixed production run.
Pairing
With its low output the Signature should be fed into an MC preamplifier that provides a lot of amplification, or into an SUT that lifts the level for an MM input, with loading set somewhere within the recommended window. With its moderate tracking force and mass, it balances on most medium mass tonearms without extra counterweights, and a turntable with a rigid, well damped plinth lets the hand-built generator track cleanly across a full side. A worn stylus does not mean replacing the cartridge, since the workshop in Japan accepts units back for a complete factory overhaul.
Alternatives
The Koetsu Rosewood Signature Platinum stays with a rosewood housing yet lacquers the aged timber and swaps in platinum magnets with silver-plated 6N copper windings at a lower 0.3 mV.
