OTTA's Mandolin is a moving coil pickup, and the maker's name stands for Over The Top Analogue. The brand was set up by Philip O'Hanlon and Eckhard Derks, launched in 2024, and the cartridge was designed in Germany by Derks. Its name, like that of the costlier Theorbo, comes from the lute family of instruments. The Mandolin is the entry point of a two-model range and carries a list price of EUR 2,000, or USD 2,500 in North America.

Key specs that matter

Output is 0.35 mV, and the internal impedance of the coils is 5.0 ohm. OTTA advises a phono stage load between 100 and 470 ohm. The frequency range is quoted as 20 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB either way. Compliance is 15 x 10-6 cm/dyne measured at 100 Hz, and the cartridge weighs 8.4 g. An elliptical diamond stylus sits on a ruby cantilever. The maker publishes no tracking force figure.

Engineering and use context

The enclosure is CNC-machined from aged red sandalwood and sits on an aluminium frame. Profile, mechanical geometry, body form and base follow the Denon DL-103, a choice made so the Mandolin mounts in standard headshells and suits a broad range of tonearms and setups. The motor uses samarium-cobalt magnets in a patented system with an enlarged magnetic gap. Its coils are wound by hand from pure iron wire in a cross-coil pattern and held to tight tolerances. OTTA states that the midrange band received particular attention during development, and each cartridge passes an extended quality check after assembly. Unlike the dearer sibling, the Mandolin keeps a cross-coil winding and the elliptical tip, making the Mandolin the plainer design of the two in stylus shape and coil geometry.

Pairing

The low output is enough to call for a high-gain MC input on the phono stage, or for a step-up transformer feeding a moving magnet phono section. A stage offering selectable load resistor values inside the recommended window is the practical choice. Because the mounting geometry copies the DL-103, arm and headshell combinations already set up for that Denon model take the Mandolin with no change of mounting approach, although the cartridge mass and compliance should still be checked against the arm counterweight range.

Alternatives

The OTTA Theorbo is the upper model of the range, sharing the sandalwood body and DL-103 mounting but adding a Micro-Ridge stylus, a denser square coil and channel balance matched more than ten times tighter, at USD 5,000.
