The sMS-200ultra is a small streaming endpoint made by SOtM in Korea, developed from the sMS-200 by adding the company's sCLK-EX clock board. Conversion is left to other equipment - it takes files from network storage or streaming services and passes them over USB to an external converter, while the owner controls playback from a tablet or a computer on the same local network. SOtM USA sells it for USD 1,200, with the master clock connector adding USD 200 and a one-year Roon licence USD 60.
Key specs that matter
The player runs Linux and handles PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD512. Connections are one audio-grade USB port, two further USB 2.0 ports and an RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet socket. The USB ports supply 5.0 V (+0.5 V, -0.25 V), with over-current protection at 0.8 A at 20 degrees C and a recommended output current up to 0.5 A. The standard power input is 9 V DC, with 12 V or 6.5 to 8.5 V versions available, drawing up to 2 A through a 5.5 mm OD, 2.1 mm ID jack. The case measures 106 x 48 x 227 mm and weighs 1.5 kg. Operating temperature is 10 to 30 degrees C, storage temperature 0 to 40 degrees C and humidity 10 to 90%. Roon, DLNA and the other protocols listed below all run on the same box, so one player can serve several control apps.
Engineering and use context
A dedicated media player board handles playback, the internal reference clock is the sCLK-EX2425 board, and the power circuits use an ultra low noise regulator together with an active noise canceller. An optional isolated 10 MHz master clock input on a 50 ohm BNC connector, with a 75 ohm version also offered, lets the player lock to an external reference such as a Rubidium clock. The design is fanless. On the software side the unit works as a Roon Ready endpoint, a DLNA renderer, a Music Player Daemon, a Logitech Media Server and Squeezelite player, an HQPlayer NAA and a Shairport receiver, so it fits into most common playback systems without a dedicated app.
Pairing
Any USB DAC can be connected, and SOtM's sDP-1000EX works as a matching converter and preamplifier, although its USB input stops at 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD128, below the player's upper limits. The smaller sHP-100 DAC and headphone amplifier of the same brand accepts USB PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz with DSD64 and DSD128. A tX-USBultra regenerator in the same 106 mm case can be placed between the two for a stacked three-box source.
Alternatives
SOtM's sMS-200 is the standard network player from which this model was developed, built without the sCLK-EX clock board.
