The Rivo Plus Special Edition is a network streaming transport from Volumio of Italy, built on the same technical platform as the standard Rivo Plus but finished with a handcrafted leather inlay made in Florence together with Apelle Lab. The leather sits on the front of a metal chassis, giving the unit a furniture-like look. It sells for EUR 1,299, the same price as the standard version, and runs Volumio OS with the Volumio AI layer and its Supersearch function for finding music.
Key specs that matter
This is a pure transport with no internal DAC, so it works only with an external converter. The USB output reaches PCM 1536 kHz at 32-bit and DSD1024 with multiroom disabled. I2S over HDMI carries PCM up to 768 kHz at 32-bit and DSD512, or DSD256 with multiroom active, and the HDMI pinout can be routed to match the DAC. S/PDIF coaxial and AES/EBU outputs each handle PCM up to 192 kHz at 24-bit and DSD64 via DoP. Volumio quotes the chassis as 27 x 15 x 5 cm, and the unit is designed and assembled in Florence.
Engineering and use context
Processing runs on an Amlogic S905D3 system on a chip with four cores at 1.9 GHz, backed by 2 GB of DDR4 memory and 16 GB of eMMC storage. Compared with the original Rivo, the Plus gains a dedicated ASIC that drives its coaxial and AES/EBU sockets, and upgraded MEMS clocks in the USB hub IC aimed at lower jitter. A 3.5 mm trigger jack delivers 12 V, positive on tip, to switch other components on and off. Network links comprise a Gigabit Ethernet port, 2x2 MIMO Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac on 2.4 and 5 GHz, and Bluetooth 5.0 is also fitted. The unit is Roon Ready certified and supports multiroom playback, and an NFC card comes in the box. There are three USB-A ports, one reserved for a DAC, one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 for storage, and the HDMI port can also mirror the interface at up to 4K and 60 fps. Power comes from a 5 V DC, 3 A supply through a 5.5 x 2.1 mm barrel jack, and Volumio sells the Lineo5 linear power supply as an option for EUR 349.
Pairing
Any DAC with USB, coaxial or AES/EBU input can take the signal, while DACs that accept I2S over HDMI use the highest-resolution path besides USB. Supported services include AirPlay, Spotify Connect, TIDAL and TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, UPnP/DLNA and OpenHome, plus network shares, and the player reads DSD, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AAC, Vorbis and MP3 files. Control runs from the app or a web browser.
