The RENA S2 is a compact wireless streamer and DAC made by Electrocompaniet of Norway, part of the EC Living line that the company runs next to its Classic range. It builds on the original Rena S-1 as the second-generation model and was launched together with the Rena SA2 streaming amplifier. Electrocompaniet describes it as the most affordable way into its products, an add-on that brings network playback to an existing amplifier or pair of powered speakers. The European price was EUR 999.
Key specs that matter
Conversion runs through a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC, and a 32-bit floating-point DSP handles digital processing. Supported files include WAV, MP3, AAC+, Vorbis, ALAC, FLAC, APE and WMA up to 192 kHz and 24 bit, plus DSD up to DSD128 at 5.6 MHz. Wired inputs are two optical, one coaxial, a USB port for external storage and Gigabit Ethernet at 1000 Mbps. A single combined socket provides both the analogue line output and an optical output, and power arrives through a DC input. The enclosure is solid metal in shiny silver aluminium, measuring 180 mm wide, 180 mm deep and 35 mm high, and the unit weighs 1.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
Wireless links cover 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth streaming and WiSA at 96 kHz and 24 bit for direct connection to wireless speakers. Streaming services and protocols include AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Roon Ready, DLNA and internet radio, and the player works with Audirvana. Setup and daily control run through the EC Play app for iOS and Android. A Bluetooth remote from the EC Living range is supplied, with three programmable favourite buttons for radio stations or library items. The DSP carries adjustable post-processing presets for small speakers, bookshelf models, floorstanders and subwoofers, so the output can be shaped to the connected speaker type. Design and manufacture take place in Norway.
Pairing
The line output feeds any integrated amplifier or preamplifier, and the optical output can drive an outboard converter if the owner prefers a separate DAC. Because the S2 has no amplification of its own, powered speakers can also be connected directly. Over WiSA the system grows without cables through Electrocompaniet's SIRA L1 wireless subwoofer or the TANA L1 and L2 wireless speakers.
Alternatives
The Electrocompaniet ECM 1 MKII is a full-width Classic line streamer with its own converter, handling PCM to 192 kHz and DSD128.
