The NP5 Prisma MK2 is a compact network streamer from Primare, the Swedish company known for its Scandinavian design philosophy. It is a streaming transport with digital outputs, designed to add Primare's Prisma network player technology to virtually any component with a digital input, whether Primare or another brand.
Key specs that matter
The unit streams from Qobuz, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth and Roon, and plays from local USB and network storage. Its digital outputs, one coaxial and one optical, run at a selectable rate from 44.1 to 192 kHz at 16 or 24 bit and feed an external DAC or receiver, and it has no DAC of its own. Power comes from an external 5 V supply, and consumption is below 3.6 W in use and 2.9 W in standby. Wi-Fi is dual band, the wired port is 10/100 Ethernet, and a USB-A port reads local storage. An RS232 connection controls volume, mute, standby and input selection of earlier Primare models. The unit measures 143 x 36 x 125 mm and weighs 0.5 kg. The European price was EUR 600.
Engineering and use context
Prisma is Primare's bundle of network player and multi-room technologies, used across its range up to its most expensive components. The NP5 brings the whole platform to a small box, so an existing DAC, integrated amplifier with digital input or home cinema receiver gains full streaming functions. Control comes from familiar streaming apps and the dedicated Prisma app, which also configures the digital output and manages network drives. Voice control through smart speakers is supported, and firmware updates add features over time. Multi-room and multi-zone playback groups the NP5 with other Prisma devices, wired or wireless, so different rooms can play the same or different sources. The RS232 link means that owners of older Primare amplifiers can control them from the Prisma app, adding app volume control and input selection to components that predate it. Primare's design follows the Swedish idea of lagom, not too much and not too little, and the NP5 is meant to be tucked inconspicuously into a system. Because it is a transport, the converter can be chosen or upgraded separately. The NP5 Prisma MK2 is available in black.
Pairing
The NP5 Prisma MK2 suits Primare's integrated amplifiers with built-in DACs and any external DAC with a digital input. Older Primare amplifiers with RS232 can be controlled through it.
Alternatives
