The NDX 2 is a network player from Naim Audio with a built-in DAC and discrete analogue output stages. Naim presents it as an upgradable source that streams high-resolution files over UPnP and also handles AirPlay, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, TIDAL and USB playback. The model is no longer listed as available by the maker.
Key specs that matter
Decoding covers all HD audio formats up to 32 bit and 384 kHz or DSD128. WAV plays up to 32 bit and 384 kHz, lossless FLAC, AIFF and Apple ALAC files up to 24 bit and 384 kHz, OGG and WMA up to 48 kHz, and MP3, AAC and M4A up to 48 kHz at 320 kbit, with gapless playback on all formats. Other sources connect through two TOSLINK optical ports rated to 24 bit and 96 kHz and through RCA and BNC coaxial ports rated to 24 bit and 192 kHz with DoP 64Fs, and a coaxial BNC output passes signals up to 24 bit and 192 kHz to an external converter. For analogue connection the player offers an RCA pair plus a 5-pin DIN socket. The case measures 43.2 cm wide, 8.7 cm high and 31.4 cm deep and weighs 10 kg.
Engineering and use context
The converter chip is a Burr-Brown part followed by discrete current-to-voltage conversion. The latest Naim network card uses low-noise, high-speed LVDS, and audio is oversampled in a SHARC DSP to 40-bit accuracy. Network links are Ethernet at 10 or 100 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac with an internal antenna and BLE 4.2, and the player is Roon Ready with Chromecast, Qobuz and internet radio support. Party Mode lets it play in sync with as many as five other Naim streamers, and internet radio streams in Windows Media, MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis and MMS formats are supported. USB Type A sockets on the fascia and the back panel accept memory sticks and supply 1.6 A of charge. A 12.7 cm colour LCD displays cover art and track details, while control is through four front-panel buttons, the supplied remote using the Zigbee RF4CE system and the Focal and Naim App. Power use is 19 W in normal operation, below 2 W in network standby, below 0.5 W in standby and below 0.3 W when off, on 115 V or 230 V mains, and automatic standby engages within 20 minutes.
Pairing
The NDX 2 can be upgraded with an external XPS DR or 555 PS DR power supply, and the app can also control a compatible Naim amplifier.
Alternatives
The Naim NSS 333 is the network streamer of the New Classic 300 Series, with an internal DAC and high-resolution playback from UPnP servers and streaming services.
