The Musicbook 25 DSD is a network music player from Lindemann audiotechnik of Krailling, Germany, that puts a streamer, a slot-in CD drive, a DAC with USB input, an analog preamplifier and a headphone stage into a single compact chassis. It belongs to the Musicbook series, whose housings are milled from 6.5 mm solid aluminium and assembled in Germany. Its US launch price was USD 6,295, and CAD 6,995 in Canada.

Key specs that matter

Two AK4490 converter chips handle D/A conversion at 352.8 or 384 kHz and 32 bit, or in DSD256. THD plus noise is below 0.001% at 0 dBFS, dynamic range exceeds 130 dB, and the analog stage extends from 0 to 200 kHz at -3 dB. Maximum output is 4 V on RCA and 8 V on XLR. The USB audio interface accepts PCM from 44.1 to 384 kHz and DSD64 up to DSD256. Further connections include two coaxial plus two optical S/PDIF sockets, a pair of RCA analog inputs and Bluetooth with aptX and AAC. The unit measures 280 x 220 x 65 mm, weighs 3.50 kg and consumes 0.5 W in standby, 4 W in network standby and 30 W at most from a 100 to 240 V supply.

Engineering and use context

Every digital source - CD, network stream, USB, S/PDIF and Bluetooth - can be resampled to DSD128 or DSD256, or passed in native mode or converted to PCM (DXD). In the DSD path the conversion chip acts only as a filter, with the processing moved out of it. The Teac slot-in drive plays CDs and CD-Rs and reads CD text. As a UPnP/DLNA renderer the player connects over 10/100 Mbit Ethernet or 2.4 GHz WLAN (802.11 b, g, n), streams TIDAL and TuneIn radio, and plays WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3 and DSD files gaplessly. A USB-A host port reads storage media and can charge a phone at up to 2.1 A. The preamplifier uses an analog volume control with 99 steps and separate output stages for the balanced and unbalanced outputs, and three maximum output levels can be selected. An optically bonded OLED screen has a viewing angle of almost 180 degrees, and the compact case can also stand on its side.

Pairing

The front 6.35 mm socket feeds a Class A headphone circuit with high-current output stages, specified for headphones of 32 to 300 ohm. The XLR and RCA outputs are regulated by the analog volume stage, which lets a stereo power amp be connected straight to the player, and control comes from a remote handset charged over micro USB or an app for iOS and Android.

Alternatives

The Lindemann Musicbook 20 is the network player of the same range without the CD drive, launched in the US at USD 5,495.
