The DNP-2000NE is a network audio player from Denon that combines HEOS streaming, a USB DAC and an HDMI ARC input in a full-width chassis. It was launched at GBP 1,400 in black or silver and GBP 1,600 in graphite silver, and Denon presents it as a way to bring streaming and TV audio into an existing stereo system.
Key specs that matter
Conversion uses four ES9018K2M chips rated at 384 kHz/32-bit. Through the line output Denon quotes a DSD response of 2 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB and 2 Hz to 20 kHz for 44.1 kHz PCM, a signal to noise ratio of 120 dB for DSD and 118 dB for PCM, harmonic distortion of 0.0006 percent with DSD and 0.0008 percent with 24-bit PCM, and a dynamic range of 112 dB and 118 dB respectively. Fixed line output is 2.2 Vrms and the variable output reaches 4.5 Vrms. The headphone amplifier gives 150 mW into 32 ohm at high gain. The unit is 434 x 107 x 421 mm with antennas, 374 mm deep without them, and weighs 9.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
Ultra AL32 Processing interpolates extra sample points for PCM signals up to 192 kHz/24-bit. One master clock serves the four DACs, the network module and the USB-DAC input, and a jitter reducer is fitted. The asynchronous USB-B input accepts PCM up to the full resolution of the converters and DSD up to 11.2 MHz, with an isolator on USB and the other digital inputs. Analogue and digital boards are separated, the analogue stage takes an independent supply line from an EI transformer, and the output circuit follows a minimum signal path. The front panel, volume knob and buttons are aluminium, the steel covers are 1 mm thick and the bottom plate is doubled. Over the network the player handles WAV, FLAC and ALAC up to 192 kHz/24-bit and native DSD up to 5.6 MHz, with gapless playback. AirPlay 2, Roon Ready certification, Bluetooth and control through Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri are included. Power draw is 38 W in use and 0.2 W in standby.
Pairing
Digital inputs number two optical, one coaxial, the USB-B port and HDMI ARC, so a television can feed the player and its remote can set the level. Coaxial and optical outputs are provided as well. Using the variable RCA output, the player can feed a stereo power amp or powered monitors with no preamplifier in between, while the fixed output suits an integrated amplifier. The headphone gain switch has low, mid and high positions.
Alternatives
The earlier Denon DNP-800NE is a smaller HEOS network player built around a Burr-Brown PCM1795 converter.
