The d1-total is a one-box DAC and network streamer from TOTALDAC, the French maker of resistor-ladder converters, and the company describes it as the maximum it can build into a single case. The price is EUR 28,500 including VAT, or EUR 26,200 without it. A separate power supply unit comes with it.

Key specs that matter

Conversion uses a d1-triunity R2R DAC with volume control, built from 300 Vishay Bulk Metal Foil resistors with a tolerance of 0.01%, followed by a Class A output stage made of discrete transistors. Maximum output is 3.5 V RMS on RCA and 7 V RMS on XLR. Inputs are asynchronous XMOS USB at 192 kHz, coaxial RCA at 192 kHz, AES-EBU at 192 kHz, optical at 96 kHz and RJ45 Ethernet. PCM is accepted from 44.1 to 192 kHz at 16 to 24 bit, and DSD as DoP on the coaxial, AES-EBU and USB inputs. Streaming supports Roon Ready with RAAT certification, JPlay certification, Audirvana, Qobuz Connect, UPnP and DLNA, AirPlay, Squeezelite and NAA for HQPlayer. Consumption is 14.2 W at 44.1 kHz and 16.5 W at 192 kHz. The main unit measures 110 x 360 x 290 mm and the power supply 67 x 122 x 180 mm, with a total weight of 7 kg.

Engineering and use context

In an R2R converter each bit of the digital word switches a resistor in a ladder network, so the accuracy of the resistors sets the linearity of the conversion, which is why TOTALDAC uses metal foil types at 0.01%. The DAC works without oversampling, and a compensation filter can be switched in or out from the remote. The clock section uses 40-femtosecond oscillators and high-performance digital buffers, and a custom clock with an anti-jitter FIFO memory stores the incoming data and reads it out again at the local clock rate, so timing errors from the source are removed. Heavy power supply decoupling and a USB microfilter loop keep noise away from the converter. The streaming board is the latest design, developed for the d1-streamer-live. Volume works on all inputs from the remote, with an OLED display, and the unit stands on anti-vibration supports. Options include live-clocking at EUR 800, live-power, a silver aluminium front at EUR 420, a 115 V version, a BNC coaxial input, active crossovers and a bass boost.

With its volume control and 7 V XLR output, the d1-total drives power amplifiers directly, and the RCA output feeds an integrated amplifier's line input.
