The CXN100 SE is a network music streamer from Cambridge Audio in the CX series, sold in Black and Lunar Grey at a US price of USD 1,099. Compared with the standard CXN100, the SE version adds an upgraded DAC and an HDMI eARC connection for routing television audio through a hi-fi.
Key specs that matter
An ESS ES9028Q2M SABRE32 chip performs the conversion. Over UPnP, from a USB drive or through the USB Type B audio input, the unit accepts PCM up to 32-bit and 768 kHz, and the local USB and USB audio paths also take DSD up to x512. The coaxial S/PDIF input covers 16 and 24 bit PCM from 32 to 192 kHz, and the optical input 32 to 96 kHz, both with DoP64. Supported file types include ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, WMA, MP3, OGG Vorbis, AAC, HE AAC and AAC+. Wi-Fi security supports WEP, WPA and WPA2, and streaming protocols include RTSP, MMS and HTTP. THD is below 0.0005 percent at 1 kHz and 20 kHz, response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.1 dB, signal-to-noise is above 120 dBr and crosstalk is below minus 120 dB at 1 kHz. The case measures 430 x 85 x 305 mm and weighs 3.55 kg.
Engineering and use context
Streaming services and protocols built in include Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Deezer, internet radio, Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast, and the player is Roon Ready. Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD covers phones and tablets. Network access is by dual-band 802.11 Wi-Fi at 2.4 and 5 GHz or by 10/100 Ethernet. Analogue sources connect by XLR or RCA next to the digital ones, and coaxial and optical digital outputs let the unit feed an outboard converter. Through the StreamMagic app the CXN100 SE can be switched into a digital preamplifier mode. The front panel carries a rotary dial and a 12.1 cm colour screen that shows album artwork or can be set to a VU meter display. The switch-mode supply accepts 100 to 240 V, draws at most 30 W and uses under 0.5 W in ECO standby. In the box come an IEC mains cord, a control-bus cable and two small antennas.
Pairing
In preamp mode the unit connects straight to a stereo power amp or to self-powered monitors and switches between its analogue and digital sources, including the television via HDMI eARC. Alternatively it can run as a fixed-level source into an integrated amplifier, and the control-bus cable links it with compatible Cambridge Audio components.
Alternatives
The standard Cambridge Audio CXN100 is the same network player without the SE upgrades to the DAC and HDMI eARC.
