The AXN10 is a network player in the AX line from Cambridge Audio, built around the StreamMagic Gen 4 module and software developed in-house in London and an ESS Sabre ES9033Q DAC. Announced in February 2023 and shipped from March, this limited edition model joined the entry-level AX series of separates next to its integrated amplifier, CD player and tuner. Launch prices were GBP 549, USD 599 and EUR 599, and the US price has since dropped to USD 499 in a Lunar Grey finish.

Key specs that matter

PCM playback reaches 32-bit and 768 kHz, and DSD is decoded up to DSD512. The file format list covers FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD alongside compressed MP3, WMA, OGG Vorbis and the AAC family, including HE AAC and AAC+. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 70 kHz within +0 and -1 dB. Wired networking follows IEEE 802.3 at 10 Base-T or 100 Base-T, and wireless access uses dual band Wi-Fi 5 at 2.4 and 5 GHz. Bluetooth 5.0 supports the A2DP and AVRCP profiles with SBC and AAC codecs. Maximum power consumption is 20 W and standby draw is below 0.5 W. The case follows the full 430 mm hi-fi width at 430 x 75 x 305 mm and weighs 3.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

Sources on the input side are Ethernet, a USB socket for mass storage drives, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The output panel has an unbalanced analogue line out on RCA sockets together with coaxial and optical digital sockets. Service support covers UPnP, local USB media, internet radio, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL and Qobuz, and Roon Ready certification is included. The player also works with Google Home and can be grouped with other StreamMagic devices for multiroom playback. Internet radio, streaming services and personal music collections are all browsed and controlled through the StreamMagic app rather than a traditional infrared remote, and the app provides an adjustable 7-band EQ for the output.

Pairing

With a fixed analogue output, the AXN10 connects to any integrated amplifier with a spare RCA input, and its width matches the other full-size AX components such as the amplifiers of that series. Owners who already have a standalone DAC can instead take the signal from the coaxial or optical socket and use the player purely as a network transport, with conversion handled by the external unit.

Alternatives

The Cambridge Audio MXN10 is a half-width network player announced on the same day, which Cambridge Audio says offers the same features and functionality in a more compact form, with the same ES9033Q DAC and StreamMagic Gen 4 platform.
