Mission's 778S is a DAC-equipped network player and the British brand's first product of this type. Launched around January 2026, it joins the 778X integrated amplifier and the 778CDT transport in the half-width 778 Series as the digital partner for the 778X. Its streaming platform was developed with Silent Angel, a specialist in network audio.
Key specs that matter
An ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M 32-bit converter with HyperStream architecture and a Time Domain Jitter Eliminator converts the signal, with five selectable digital filters. A Rockchip RK3399 processor with ARM Cortex-A72 cores at 2.0 GHz and Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5 GHz runs the streaming software. PCM is handled from 44.1 kHz to 768 kHz at 32 bit, and DSD64 to DSD512 natively over USB from a computer. Incoming data can be upsampled to 352.8 or 384 kHz. Outputs are RCA, XLR, optical, coaxial, USB-A audio and a headphone jack. Output level is 0 to 2.05 Vrms on RCA and 0 to 4.1 Vrms on XLR, with output impedances of 120 ohm on RCA and 56 ohm on XLR. Signal to noise ratio exceeds 116 dB on RCA and 120 dB on XLR, THD is below 0.001%, and response is ±0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The unit measures 236 x 98 x 380 mm and weighs 5.3 kg.
Engineering and use context
The variable analogue outputs let the 778S work as a digital preamplifier, setting the level for a downstream power amplifier or active speaker pair. Its digital outputs also allow it to serve purely as a transport for a separate DAC or for the converter in the 778X. Inputs are USB-C for a computer, two USB-A ports for storage in FAT32 or exFAT, Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. Supported file formats are FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, APE, DSF, DFF, MP3, WMA, AAC and OGG, and the streaming services and protocols include Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, TuneIn, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, DLNA and SMB. The headphone amplifier drives loads from 20 to 600 ohm, with THD below 0.01% at 50 mW and an output impedance of 2.35 ohm. A 57 mm OLED display shows playback information, and standby consumption is below 0.5 W. The finish is black or silver, matching the other 778 Series units.
Pairing
The 778S connects to the 778X integrated amplifier through its analogue or digital outputs, and the 778CDT completes the series with CD playback. The front jack drives high-impedance headphones without an external amplifier.
Alternatives
Mission currently makes no other network streamer besides the 778S.
