The Sentinel DAC is the three-chassis converter system from MSB Technology of California, announced on 30 July 2025 at USD 375,000. It splits the job into a Sentinel Digital Director, a Sentinel Analog Converter and a Sentinel Power Supply, and MSB built new clock, power and link hardware for it rather than scaling up an older platform. A matching Sentinel Amp was announced as being in development at the same time.

Key specs that matter

The Analog Converter holds 32 Hybrid DAC MKII modules arranged as two mono DACs with 16 modules per channel - four times the eight-module count of MSB's earlier top designs. Thousands of aerospace-grade precision resistors are used in these ladder modules. The Digital Director takes four custom-configured digital input modules, and the system also offers RCA and XLR analogue inputs. Outputs are two XLR connections per channel, which allows bi-amping, plus a dedicated Confluence port. All three boxes are 444.5 mm wide and 419.1 mm deep, one of them 108 mm tall and the other two 239.6 mm tall, and the complete set weighs 115.6 kg. Shipped, the system travels as four boxes on one pallet at 216 kg.

Engineering and use context

Digital processing and conversion never share a ground here. The Digital Director sends a conversion-ready signal to the left and right mono DACs over two fibre optic Sentinel-Links, giving complete electrical isolation between the digital and analogue domains. Timing comes from the Sentinel Clock, a discretely built circuit using an ovenised crystal that sits on a tuned, isolated platform to reduce mechanical disturbance. The Sentinel Power Supply contains three independent supplies - one for each mono DAC and a third, low-noise design dedicated to the clock - and connects through DC umbilical cables offered in 81, 122 and 183 cm lengths. MSB's Bit Diffusion Technology (BDT) is applied to the modules, and an analogue preamp stage is built into the converter. Chassis parts are machined from billet aluminium on 5-axis equipment, with a stainless steel badge cut by a 0.5 mm end mill. The boxes must not be stacked - each needs its own shelf with at least 76 mm of space above and 51 mm at the sides, in a ventilated spot away from direct sun.

Pairing

The Confluence connection was designed for the forthcoming Sentinel Amp, which takes its drive from the low output impedance of all 32 modules instead of a standard XLR link. Until then, the doubled XLR outputs connect to one stereo amplifier or to two amplifiers in a bi-amp arrangement, and the rack must provide three separate shelves.
