The DP32, fully named the Audiant DP32 DAC Preamplifier, is a digital and analogue preamplifier with a built-in USB DAC from Perreaux, the New Zealand electronics maker, and it is designed and manufactured entirely in New Zealand. It belongs to Perreaux's Audiant range alongside the Audiant 100p. The DP32 combines a 32-bit converter, analogue inputs, a volume control and balanced outputs, so it can sit between sources and a power amplifier.

Key specs that matter

Perreaux uses an ESS Sabre32 ES9018 Reference chip with HyperStream architecture and a jitter eliminator. Digital inputs are asynchronous USB, AES/EBU on XLR at 110 ohm, two coaxial RCA inputs at 75 ohm and two optical inputs, all accepting up to 24 bit and 192 kHz. Analogue inputs are one balanced or unbalanced input and one unbalanced input that can be switched to home theatre bypass, with input impedances of 20 kOhm balanced and 47 kOhm unbalanced. Outputs are one XLR and one RCA preamplifier output and one RCA line output, with fixed or variable level. Maximum output is 16.0 V RMS on XLR and 8.0 V RMS on RCA, with output impedances of 100 ohm and 50 ohm. THD+N is typically 0.0005% at 1 kHz and below 0.001% across 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +0/-0.05 dB, signal to noise ratio and dynamic range are 140 dB, and channel separation is better than 115 dB. The unit measures 431 x 67 x 305 mm and weighs 8.0 kg.

Engineering and use context

The I2S data bus is re-clocked to one of two low-jitter master clocks, and discrete shunt regulators power the clocks and re-clocking circuits. The digital inputs are electrically isolated from each other. The whole signal path is balanced, with RCA signals converted to balanced form on entry and back on exit, and direct coupling removes capacitors from the route entirely. Volume is set by a buffered passive balanced control, which keeps the input and output impedances constant at every setting. A home theatre bypass passes a processor's front channels through at unity gain. A touch panel, a dimmable LED display, a full-function remote control and a 12 V trigger output complete the unit.

Pairing

With 16 V available on XLR, the DP32 drives any power amplifier directly, including Perreaux's own power amplifiers, and its fixed line output can feed a recorder or a second system. A CD transport, streamer and computer connect digitally, and one analogue source such as a phono stage uses one of the analogue inputs.

Alternatives

The Perreaux Audiant 100p is another model in the same Audiant range of the New Zealand company.
