The SMSL D200 is a desktop DAC and preamplifier sold under the SMSL name by Foshan Shuangmusanlin Technology of China. It is built around a single ROHM BD34352EKV converter chip and combines wired digital inputs, a Bluetooth receiver and balanced as well as single-ended analogue outputs in a silver aluminium case with a remote handset.

Key specs that matter

Four inputs - USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth - feed XLR and RCA outputs. Maximum line level is 5 Vrms from XLR and 2.5 Vrms from RCA. SMSL states THD+N of 0.00019 percent (-114 dB, unweighted), dynamic range of 123 dB and SNR of 123 dB balanced and 121 dB single-ended. Via USB it takes PCM from 44.1 to 768 kHz at 32 bit and native DSD up to 22.5792 MHz, which is DSD512, while DoP over USB reaches 11.2896 MHz. Optical and coaxial inputs take PCM from 44.1 to 192 kHz at 24 bit and DoP64. Power draw stays under 10 W, with standby under 0.5 W. The chassis measures 200 x 47.9 x 197.9 mm and weighs 1.214 kg.

Engineering and use context

An XMOS XU-316 controller runs the USB link in asynchronous USB 2.0 mode. Windows 7 through 11 need a driver, while macOS 10.6 and later, Linux, Android and iOS work without one. MQA files are fully decoded from USB, optical and coaxial sources, and MQA-CD playback is supported. A clock processing circuit developed in house and named CK-03 is intended to cut jitter, and a separate input accepts a standard 10 MHz reference or an atomic clock. The Bluetooth section uses a Qualcomm chip with LDAC at 24 bit and 96 kHz, aptX, aptX HD, AAC and SBC, and the display can show track details and lyrics while offering playback control over the wireless link. A 48 mm fully bonded tempered glass panel carries the menu, which can also be set to Chinese. The supply is linear and uses a patented adaptive voltage switching scheme, with several low-noise regulated stages dedicated to the analogue circuits. Connection terminals are gold plated, and the design carries the Hi-Res certification of the Japan Audio Society.

The balanced output and volume control let the D200 feed a power amplifier directly. SMSL names its own PA200 GaN power amplifier as a partner, whose stereo pass-through mode is meant to run with the D200 acting as DAC and preamplifier, and the XLR connection suits active monitors with balanced inputs as well.
