The Varèse Transport is a CD and SACD transport from dCS, the British company based in Cambridge, known for its Ring DAC. It was added in September 2025 to the Varèse Music System, which comprises the Core, User Interface, two Mono DACs, a Master Clock, the Varèse Remote and the Mosaic ACTUS app. It was priced at GBP 35,000 or USD 39,950 and is available in silver or black.

Key specs that matter

The Transport plays Red Book CDs in their native 44.1 kS/s format and SACDs in native DSD. It uses the same mechanism as the Vivaldi Transport II and Rossini Transport, mounted in a new way. It connects to the Varèse Core through a single dCS ACTUS cable. Control is through the Varèse User Interface, the Varèse Remote or the Mosaic ACTUS app. Its body starts as one aluminium billet, with constrained layer damping added.

Engineering and use context

dCS has made CD and SACD transports since the Verdi of 2000. For the Varèse, it developed a new chassis and mechanism mounting system. The mechanism mounts are milled from solid aluminium with no joins or fixings, and constrained layer damping in the chassis dissipates vibration, which dCS says makes this its quietest, lowest-vibration transport. The Transport contains no DAC. ACTUS, the bespoke dCS interface, carries audio, control and timing signals over one cable, so the Transport sends a bit-perfect native data stream to the Varèse Core and automatically synchronises to the master clock from the Core or the Varèse Clock. This makes it the simplest dCS transport to install, since no separate clock and data cables are needed. Because it is designed only for the Varèse system, it is not a universal transport for other DACs. The Varèse system uses dCS's Tomix clocking technology and the Differential Ring DAC, a new version of the Ring DAC. dCS spent six years developing the Varèse platform. The Transport is designed, engineered and built in Cambridge. dCS describes the Varèse as its most ambitious creation to date. Its Tomix clocking and the Differential Ring DAC were developed to reduce jitter, raise linearity, lower the noise floor and eliminate crosstalk between channels.

Pairing

The Varèse Transport works only with the dCS Varèse Core and Mono DACs. The optional Varèse Master Clock synchronises the whole system.

Alternatives

dCS's Vivaldi Transport II is the CD and SACD transport of the Vivaldi system with the same mechanism.
