The TY-30 is a compact-disc player from Tonewinner, the Chinese audio electronics maker that sells hi-fi under the Tone Winner name. It plays standard CD, HDCD-encoded discs and MP3 or WMA files burned to disc, and it also accepts external digital signals, so it can act as a disc spinner and a small stand-alone converter at the same time. Tonewinner places it in its own suggested systems alongside the AD-66D and AD-86D amplifiers and TD-S3 or TD-C8 speakers.
Key specs that matter
An Analog Devices AD1955 chip does the decoding, which accepts PCM data up to 24 bit and 192 kHz. The analog side delivers a reference level of 2 V plus or minus 1 dB at 1 kHz through two pairs of RCA sockets and one balanced XLR pair. Tonewinner lists frequency response as 20 Hz to 20 kHz within plus 0 and minus 1 dB, total harmonic distortion at or below 0.005% at 1 kHz, crosstalk of at least 104 dB and channel imbalance of no more than 1 dB. For digital work there is one coaxial and one optical input, plus matching coaxial and optical outputs. The chassis measures 444 x 106 x 370 mm and weighs 8.3 kg net.
Engineering and use context
After the converter, the output stage relies on OPA2134 operational amplifiers which Tonewinner specifies as ultra-low distortion, low-noise parts, arranged in a balanced differential amplifying circuit. The disc drive is a customised unit sitting on its own anti-vibration base, and the transport section is physically separated from the other circuits to limit interference reaching the analog stages. The all-aluminium-alloy cabinet carries a thick brushed front panel, finished in black or silver, and it stands on honeycomb-shaped metal feet meant to decouple it from the shelf. A blue display shows track information, a remote handset is supplied, and a selector sets mains input to 110 V or 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz to suit local mains.
Pairing
Any amplifier or preamplifier fitted with XLR sockets can take the balanced feed, while the RCA pair covers conventional line inputs. Through the coaxial and optical inputs, a television, streamer or computer transport can use the internal AD1955 stage, and the digital outputs allow an outboard converter to take over decoding. Its 444 mm width matches other full-size Tonewinner electronics for a uniform stack.
Alternatives
Within the CD player category, Tonewinner also builds the TY-1CD, which uses an ES9028 converter and adds playback of the CD layer on SACD discs.
