The SL-G700M2 is a network and Super Audio CD player from Technics and the successor to the SL-G700. It combines a disc transport for stereo Super Audio CD and for CD, and it also accepts CD-R and CD-RW discs, with a streaming section, its own DAC stage and a built-in headphone output, offered in silver or black, and it was announced for availability at the end of January 2023.

Key specs that matter

For SACD, Technics quotes a frequency response of 2 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB, a dynamic range of 110 dB (IHF-A) and 121 dB signal-to-noise, both via the balanced output, with THD+N of 0.0006% at 1 kHz and 0 dB. For CD, the response is 2 Hz to 20 kHz at -3 dB and the balanced dynamic range is 98 dB. File playback covers WAV and AIFF up to 384 kHz and 32 bit, FLAC and ALAC up to 384 kHz and 24 bit, and DSD up to 11.2 MHz, with full MQA decoding. The headphone socket is a 6.3 mm jack delivering 110 mV into 32 ohm at maximum volume. Power consumption is 45 W, or 2 W in standby with the network kept on. The case measures 430 x 98 x 407 mm.

Engineering and use context

The D/A section is called the High Precision Coherent D/A Converter and joins three elements - coherent processing, a dual monaural converter using two ESS ES9026PRO chips, and a proprietary discrete amplifier circuit. Power comes from a Multi-Stage Silent Power Supply with three stages of noise suppression, namely high-speed switching at about 300 kHz, a low-noise regulator built from discrete parts, and a newly developed current injection active noise cancelling circuit. Inside, the chassis is split into four independent sections for power supply, digital interface, analogue circuits and disc drive. The drive sits in a three-layer structure with a die-cast aluminium tray. A Pure Disc Playback mode shuts down every circuit block not needed for SACD or CD. The front panel is 7 mm aluminium and the side panels are 3 mm aluminium with a hairline finish.

Pairing

The player offers XLR balanced and RCA unbalanced analogue outputs, and feeds a stereo amplifier without an extra box. Optical and coaxial digital inputs accept LPCM from other sources, while matching digital outputs feed an external converter. USB Type A ports front and rear, a USB-B input and a LAN socket serve files, and Wi-Fi joins Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal, Deezer and internet radio.
