The SCD-025 Mk.II is a CD player from the Signature Series of Danish maker Vitus Audio, and it doubles as a digital hub thanks to a set of digital inputs. Vitus says the design used one of its favourite turntables playing through the Masterpiece MP-P201 phono stage as a reference point, aiming for the best possible analogue result from a digital source. Buyers can order it in white, black or silver at the base price of USD 33,600, or in one of the special colours such as titanium orange for USD 39,900.
Key specs that matter
For analogue connection the rear panel offers balanced XLR sockets alongside single-ended RCA sockets, each pair driven from an 80 ohm source impedance. Bandwidth is stated as more than 800 kHz, noise sits over 110 dB below signal at 1 kHz, and distortion plus noise is under 0.01%. A USB B port accepts up to 384 kHz and DSD128, while one XLR AES/EBU input and one RCA S/PDIF input (110 and 75 ohm) take up to 192 kHz, all at 24 bit. A digital output on XLR and RCA passes 192 kHz and 24 bit to other equipment. Conversion uses two AD1955 chips running in mono mode, clocked by a 24.576 MHz master clock with a tolerance of 5 ppm. The chassis is built from aluminium parts and measures 435 mm wide, 428 mm deep and 135 mm high including feet, with a weight of 26 kg. Power draw is under 1 W in standby and 45 W in operation.
Engineering and use context
The disc drive sits on a double suspension that isolates it from outside vibration, which Vitus says lets it read data more consistently and lean less on internal error correction. Incoming data passes through an Engineered Q8 sample rate converter module that upsamples incoming data in order to reduce jitter. The analogue stage is taken directly from the company's amplifiers. Special attention went into the power supply, which is split into four separate supplies - one for the drive, one for the digital section and one each for the left and right analogue channels - to lower the noise floor.
Pairing
With both balanced and single-ended outputs, the player connects to any line preamplifier or integrated amplifier, and the digital inputs let a computer or streamer use its converter. Within the Vitus catalogue, the Signature Series supplies matching line stages and amplifiers in the same case style and finishes.
Alternatives
In the Masterpiece Series Vitus also builds the MP-T201 Mk.II, a dedicated CD transport for use with a separate DAC.
